Duties: Serves as a member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). Commissioners represent the views of residents of their Single Member District (SMD). After deliberation and votes, the ANC Commission advises the Mayor, Council and executive agencies in local matters such as parking, zoning, traffic, liquor licenses, permits, etc.Deberes: Se desempeña como miembro de la “Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC)”. Biographical Information
What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District (SMD) and how do you intend to address it?
How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?
QualificationsI've lived in Eckington since 2013 and in DC since the late 90s, have two kids in DC public schools, and am active in my neighborhood helping neighbors and supporting community schools and spaces. I'm the incumbent ANC for 5F07, having taken over mid term from the last ANC who vacated her seat. During my time, I've advocated for safer streets around the schools in my district, successfully escalated facility issues for McKinley Middle & Tech, done testimony in support of stronger regulations on industrial polluters in our neighborhood, and worked with DPR to ensure that neighbors' voices are incorporated into the Harry Thomas Rec Center modernization process.
The city is planning to modernize the Harry Thomas Rec Center and it's very important that neighbor perspectives and needs are heard and incorporated in the design. I have been closely tracking this process, trying to involve more neighbors in giving feedback, and advocating for designs that will make the space safer, more inclusive, and better connected to other parts of the neighborhood. My SMD also includes 3 schools, and it's a high priority for me to do what I can to support these schools and advocate for them with the city government on facilities, public safety issues and any other concerns.
I will continue tabling at community events, showing up at community meetings, and getting to know neighbors in my SMD. I championed an annual mailer to all residents from our ANC Commission that will help get the word out about who we are and what we do, and plan to design and order signs with Commission and meeting info around the neighborhood.
