Duties: Serves as a member of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC). Commissioners represent the views of residents of their Single Member District (SMD). After deliberation and votes, the ANC Commission advises the Mayor, Council and executive agencies in local matters such as parking, zoning, traffic, liquor licenses, permits, etc.Deberes: Se desempeña como miembro de la “Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC)”. Los comisionados representan las opiniones de los residentes de su distrito miembro único “Single Member District(SMD)”. What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District (SMD) and how do you intend to address it?
How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?
Chronic Alley Sanitation & Rodent Abatement.
Alley conditions and rat burrows represent the most urgent public health frustration across the SMD. Aging residential Supercans, cracked alley aprons, neglected parcels, and nearby commercial dining corridors along Georgia Avenue and Kennedy Street create ideal breeding grounds. Residents frequently submit repeated 311 tickets for rodent abatement and can replacements, only to see treatments applied piecemeal rather than through coordinated block-by-block eradication.
To engage residents effectively, especially those who have never heard of an Advisory Neighborhood Commission, it's important to shift the paradigm from civic theory to tangible utility. Most people do not care about bureaucratic mandates or parliamentary procedure; they care whether their alley smells, if cars fly down their residential street, and why a 311 request was closed without being fixed.
