The number one concern I hear about when talking with neighbors is the issue of sanitation and rat control. The automated lifting arms on DPW garbage trucks frequently break our bins and scatter garbage in alleyways. Combined with an insufficient number of public trash cans in high traffic areas, these problems are allowing trash and rats to proliferate. As ANC 4B05 Commissioner I would: - Push for modern, front-loading, rodent-proof trash cans in high-traffic areas on or near Georgia as envisioned by the REMY Act recently introduced by the Council. - Request Council funding for free bin replacements cans broken by DPW. - Increase public bins by pushing DPW to install more cans in areas suffering from extra litter. - Empower residents with clear information for promoting rat control.
I'm committed to hearing from as many voices as possible, and weighing their various perspectives, before deciding how to vote on any particularly impactful resolution or action taken by my Commission. I will hold community meetings with an emphasis on in-person meetings when possible. Hopefully this will encourage neighbors who are not as digitally connected to attend and participate. I anticipate that an email newsletter will be my primary information source. My email inbox will always be open for feedback. Mindful of the digital divide, I may also distribute flyers or knock on doors when necessary.
Qualifications As a 31-year resident of ANC 4B05, I have a deep familiarity with the neighborhood and its residents. I have engaged with environmental issues, such as organizing a neighborhood tree-planting project, co-founding the Fort Stevens Forest Patch Stewards and, on behalf of DarkSky DC, testifying about light pollution before the National Capital Planning Commission and a D.C. Council committee. My professional background is in journalism and law, which gives me an understanding of legal and regulatory issues. I own a small business, so I know the challenges that face entrepreneurs in the District of Columbia..
The most important issue facing our neighborhood is the proposal from the D.C. Office of Planning to designate much of ANC 4B05 as a so-called "Moderate-Scale Residential Neighborhood." This would almost certainly lead to "upzoning" of our residential neighborhood, allowing developers to demolish existing homes and replace them with four-story apartment buildings and retail businesses. If future drafts of OP's proposal still target residential areas of ANC4B05 for increased density, I will work with my fellow commissioners to adopt a resolution that suggests alternative ways of increasing the housing supply, such as building large apartment buildings on Georgia Avenue to welcome new residents who would help support a vibrant retail sector on that important commercial corridor.
While talking with my neighbors and gathering nearly 50 petition signatures to place my name on the ballot, only one person was even aware of OP's proposal, and he seemed unsure of its implications. This clearly shows the need for ANC 4B to improve outreach to residents and keep them informed about actions of the D.C. government that directly affect them. As commissioner, I will hold regular SMD meetings, distribute a commissioner's newsletter, post ANC news to the appropriate list serve(s), and work with my fellow commissioners to ensure that the ANC 4B website includes timely information about the commission and prompt posting of video from our virtual meetings.
