What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District (SMD) and how do you intend to address it?

How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?

Qualifications I have expertise on transportation issues and was engaged with ANC 4B’s Vision Zero committee before its dissolution at the end of 2024. As a trained scientist, I am well prepared to build on that prior experience. I am by nature someone who likes to dig in on an issue—this has allowed me to excel at understanding complicated regulatory issues and get up to speed quickly on new topics. I want to now put that skillset to work at a local level for my community and believe I can be effective at digging into the minutiae so the residents in my SMD don’t have to.

While door-knocking, housing access/affordability came up as the biggest single issue, with generational challenges across the spectrum as folks expressed difficulties continuing to live in the neighborhood through changing phases of life.

DC 2050 is critical in addressing the city’s housing shortage, so first and foremost I would work with the rest of the 4B ANC to ensure the plan reflects an appropriate vision for the city. This effort would extend to the Ward 4 Councilmember as the plan comes up for a vote and, especially, as the plan moves towards implementation. To the maximum extent possible I would use the ANC’s “great weight” to lobby the Office of Planning to support increased density and increased development for projects in 4B and neighboring ANCs.
Facilitating a breadth of access is critical. I plan on having a virtual suggestion box along with QR codes around the SMD to encourage anyone walking around to reach out to me with any concerns/issues as a way to facilitate communication with those in the neighborhood who may not have the time or capacity to attend our ANC meetings. I would also aim to have monthly in-person office hours and a regular newsletter, both of which would include any relevant NOIs or other local information for which the ANC may weigh in or which I, as commissioner, could help facilitate feedback for residents with the DC govt. My goal is to be the conduit to relevant offices—residents may know what they want done but not who is responsible, and more point-to-point interactions can facilitate my help with that.
Qualifications I have decades of experience in community and union organizing, childcare advocacy and administration, labor trust fund administration and gender justice issues. Over my 20 years in Takoma DC, I have been deeply involved in advocating for the needs of Ward 4 residents and have worked to elect progressive candidates at every level of government. My community engagement includes: Co-Chair of the Ward 4 Redistricting Task Force; Organizer for DC Paid Leave and Paid Sick Days laws; School Leadership Team member and parent volunteer; and participant in planned neighborhood activities - mutual aid and clean-ups.
Federal interference, reductions in health and nutrition support, and tax cuts for the wealthy strain DC’s essential services. Cuts to the federal workforce shrink our local tax base and destabilize families. At the same time, tax breaks for the rich reduce DC’s revenue, compromising healthcare, childcare, housing and paid family leave programs in the budget. Federal law enforcement presence has created fear and uncertainty while distracting MPD from community policing. As your Commissioner, I’ll elevate our community voices from 4B01 to Capitol Hill. I'll collaborate with the incoming city administration to improve schools, traffic safety, rodent abatement, and DC's 2050 Plan while advocating for sustainable revenue solutions and legal action against federal overreach.
In canvassing the neighborhood It seems people don’t know that ANCs exist or can't recall the last time they heard from an ANC. I want to relaunch the idea of ANC 4B01 to community members to make clear that we exist and with their voices can have a powerful impact on critical issues and day-to-day life in 4B01. I will produce regular newsletters with broad dissemination across 4B01; organize block leaders to gather information about what people need and share ideas back to the ANC; work with others to schedule regular 4B01 gatherings to discuss issues like federal interference, street safety, and the DC 2050 Plan and to build community and have fun and; I will incorporate local businesses, the faith community and civic groups to ensure wide engagement across the SMD.
