Biographical Information

What is the most important issue facing your Single Member District (SMD) and how do you intend to address it?

How will you engage with residents to be an effective Commissioner, especially reaching those who are unfamiliar with the role and value of ANCs?

Qualifications Rashida Brown proudly serves SMD 1E04 and is a fifth term commissioner representing Park View and Pleasant Plains neighborhoods. During her ANC terms, which included serving as its vice chair, she helped foster transportation projects promoting pedestrian, vehicular and bicycle safety and connectivity throughout her Single Member District and supported their extension within and beyond Ward One. Rashida also worked with community members in leading a public safety task force for Georgia Ave, now Georgia Avenue Thrive, to support small businesses, protect the safety and well-being of residents and promote vibrancy and inclusivity along the corridor. She has lived in Park View for over 15 years and works as public policy leader.

Getting the Park Morton/Bruce Monroe redevelopment to the finish line. This effort is more than a decade old, has been among ANC 1E's highest priorities the entire time I've served, and is critically important to every resident in the lower Georgia Avenue community. I'm running for re-election to specifically to see it through. I'm deeply concerned about the gentrification and displacement pressure facing our Black and Brown neighbors along the corridor, and I believe the District owes it to Park Morton families to finish what we started. If elected, I would work hard to push for a coordinated effort in bringing the selected developers and architects for Bruce Monroe’s redevelopment project, DPR, & DMPED together on community engagement, park design and construction process forward.
I rely on a mix of tools, because no single ANC reaches everyone: resident surveys, direct engagement with businesses, non-profit/community stakeholders, civic associations and social media engagement, door to door education and promotion, community walks, regular SMD meetings, and one-on-one time with neighbors who request it. I've used these approaches for almost 12 years on ANC 1E from documenting resident priorities for WMATA's Better Bus Network redesign to working with District Government, developments, residents and community stakeholders to organize a strong community process on Park Morton and Bruce Monroe’s redevelopment to gathering comments to inform my resolutions on the Crosstown Project and community safety investments and strategies.
