There are many issues facing ANC1D06, but the most common one raised by neighbors I've met around the SMD while campaigning is the intersecting challenges of litter and rats. ANC Commissioners are well positioned to assist residents with accessing city services to mitigate these issues, and If elected I would take a multi-pronged approach to help reduce the amount of litter and rats. Specific strategies would include organizing monthly volunteer clean-ups, coordinating block-by-block rat treatment with residents, requesting more litter cans and street sweeping in the area, advocating for rat proof containers to be piloted, and raising awareness about proper food waste storage. I will also ensure that 311 requests are being responded to in a timely manner by following up with city agencies.
Engaging with residents is one of the most critical roles of an ANC Commissioner, and I would ensure that I am accessible to those reaching out to me whether by email, phone, text or in-person. As I've campaigned for ANC1D06 and met neighbors I always ensure I start by asking them what their top issue is and I would continue to do so as an elected Commissioner. Critically, not everyone is familiar with the role of the ANC and the value they can bring. Some ideas I would pursue to increase participation and engagement include mailing post cards each year inviting all SMD residents to sign up for the ANC email list, publicly posting notices about upcoming ANC meetings, and attending events at public spaces such as the Trinity AME Zion church so as to connect with diverse communities.
Qualifications Community Leader, Parent, Organizer, Former Commissioner for Asian & Pacific Islander Affairs, Public Health Professional, Multilingual, Funder of Racial Justice work in DC,
Currently, the biggest issue in my neighborhood is the kidnapping and abuse of my neighbors by federal agencies, particularly following the federal takeover of the District on August 11, 2025. My child's classmates have had parents disappeared, my child and I've personally seen unhoused neighbors tased and arrested by the overabundance of law enforcement all too commonly. We had a real problem with trust building in our neighborhood, given the big gap in class and primary language from one side to the next, so this past year was a true test. Thankfully neighbors have been helping each other through a variety of mutual aid efforts which I have helped organize - including grocery delivery and additional supports for families who have had primary bread-winners and parents snatched away.
I will continue to lift up community efforts where neighbors have help neighbors, as well as connect SMD neighbors to government and nonprofit resources for various areas of support. Over the past couple decades that I've led DC community organizations, served on mayoral commissions, and worked with the local nonprofit sector, I've brought my vast knowledge and connections to always lift up the voices and solutions brought by those closest to the problem. Be it community safety, rat or mosquito abatement, dealing with illegal trash dumping, youth safety, housing costs or more, there are a number of innovative solutions that residents have developed - and I firmly believe that in my role as ANC I can further connect these solutions to resources which guarantee their success.
