Voters of each township elect three members to the township board for 4-year terms. The township board has the same responsibilities within the township as those exercised by the county council. Those duties include adopting the annual township budget, fixing the tax rate for various funds, fixing the salaries of elected and appointed officers and employees of the township, excluding constables, township assessors and employees of county assessors. The board must keep a record of its proceedings.

St. Joseph Township needs a Board that puts the community before politics.
Emergency assistance should be fair, accessible, and focused on basic needs such as housing, utilities, and household stability. Township government is often where people turn when they are facing a crisis, and they deserve to be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.
If elected, I will work to ensure that St. Joseph Township provides assistance fairly, manages taxpayer resources responsibly, and remains focused on helping residents when they need it most.
SB 1 creates a growing structural budget challenge for St. Joseph Township. We will have to do more with limited resources, making responsible budgeting more important than ever.
We need to protect essential township assistance. Housing, utilities, food, and household stability, while making sure every taxpayer dollar is spent transparently and responsibly.

To provide transparency to the township board, to increase the outreach to people in our neighborhoods and fill in gaps that are missed by larger local or state government, and to provide a balance to the board that does not exist.
Indiana SB 1 would be unfairly capping or handcuffing the ability of the board to protect its communities without providing an alternative route for services that may be forced to end. It also further widens the gap between citizens and trust in its government, since taking away from everyday citizens in the interest of homeowners saving on what amounts to less urgent funds is another case of rewarding the winners of any party at the cost of the renters who do not pay property tax--32% of St. Joe Township citizens (27% statewide). It also shows that there has been no homework on this, but politicians looking to improve their own lot.
