My education, business experience, community involvement, and connection to Indian Creek have prepared me to serve on the school board. I have been married for 20 years and have two children, both Indian Creek High School graduates. I hold an associate degree in Business Management and Accounting and have owned my own business for 19 years, giving me experience in financial responsibility, leadership, and decision-making. I completed Leadership Johnson County in 2009, served on the Youth Connections Board of Directors, and currently serve on the Brave Backers Board. These experiences have taught me the value of collaboration, accountability, and serving our community.
I believe the best decisions come from listening to the people who are directly affected. I would want to hear from students, parents, teachers, and members of our community and understand their different perspectives. As a parent of two Indian Creek graduates, I know every student and family can have a different experience. I would also rely on the knowledge and experience of our educators, review the facts and data, and ask questions before making a decision. My goal would be to find common ground and make thoughtful decisions that put our students first while respecting the values and priorities of our community.
I believe our highest priorities should be strong academic foundations, student safety and well-being, and preparing every student for life after graduation. Students should have the support they need to succeed academically, whether their goal is college, a career, or another path. We should also make sure teachers have the resources and support they need to be effective in the classroom. As a parent of two Indian Creek graduates, I know students have different strengths and needs. Our focus should be on providing opportunities for every student to discover their strengths, build confidence, and graduate prepared for their next step.
With my background in business management, accounting, and owning a business for 19 years, I understand the importance of planning for changing financial conditions. I would approach the school budget with a long-term perspective, focusing on responsible spending, transparency, and accountability. I would want to understand our financial position, anticipate potential changes in funding, and prioritize spending that directly supports students and educators. I would also look for efficiencies and make decisions based on data and community needs. Most importantly, I believe we should plan ahead rather than react to financial challenges after they arise.
Over the next four years, I believe one of the greatest challenges and opportunities for the school district will be managing growth as farmland is sold and developed into subdivisions. This will require careful planning for enrollment, facilities, transportation, and staffing while maintaining the quality of education. Another key challenge will be recruiting and retaining qualified, dedicated teachers and staff. Growth also provides an opportunity to welcome new families, expand programs, and strengthen community involvement. We need to plan ahead so growth is an opportunity rather than something we are constantly reacting to.
