Trenton's Board of Education is comprised of seven members who set policy and oversee the fiscal and educational operation of the district through its administration. Board members serve three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with either two or three seats up each year. The board appoints a superintendent to oversee the district's day-to-day operations and a business administrator to supervise the business functions of the district.Candidates Daniels-Lane, Marrero-Lopez and Traylor are bracketed.

Biographical Information

What are your priorities for your term on the Board of Education? How do you plan to implement these priorities?

What issues, if any, do you believe your district needs to address in its academic program and vocational and fine arts offerings? What changes would you recommend?

What components of the school budget should be protected and perhaps increased, and what components do you think could be reduced? Please explain your answer and your strategies to accomplish this.

Are there groups of at-risk students in the community and, if so, what policies or services should the Board offer them or their families?

What, if any, new policies would you like the Board to adopt towards the sex education curriculum?

What is the role of schools in addressing the impact of ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) policies in your community?

My priorities include continuing to work on providing the best and widest educational opportunities as well as facilities for our students. I will work through the committee structure, asking pointed questions and conversations with the superintendent as he formulates the district goals that align with the new strategic plan that is being developed .
I believe the district has a wide variety of options in its programmatic offerings across the board. Mandated standalone study of civics in a democratic society is something that our students and our community could benefit from. I believe our district could also benefit from a renewed emphasis on providing work experience career exploration internship opportunities for our high schoolers. Additionally balancing the emphasis and value on both the college prep and vocational/ career and technical programming,
The budget lines that support direct instruction of students , inclusive of extended learning opportunities, learning materials, a safe school environment and the continuous maintenance and upgrades of school facilities. I’m not certain that any area could be reduced, but if there was a need I, in conjunction with the Superintendent and other board members would have to take a serious look at and evaluate which items in our estimation would have the least impact on students’ learning.
Yes, every district has some students who are considered “at risk”, the primary difference is in the numbers and the nature of their “at risk”. Develop policies and provide access to resources that would help students and families to mitigate the effects of the conditions that have caused them to be at risk.
First, I would have to do a thorough review to identify if there is an Issue with the current curriculum. Then take a look at our policies and curriculum to see how they compare to the state and community standards and recommend that our policy be updated accordingly if necessary.
Our first responsibility is the education and safety of all of our students and families as they enter or interact with our schools. It has to be made known that schools are safe places for them and encourage families to continue to send their children to school. Districts whenever possible should provide access to information that may be useful to families facing challenges because of their “immigration status”
