I am running for re-election because I believe strongly in the students, families, and staff of VCSC and want to continue helping move our schools forward. Over the past three years on the School Board, I have worked to make thoughtful, responsible decisions that put students first while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.
As a parent of four VCSC students, a longtime Vigo County resident, and a librarian and community leader, I bring experience in communication, policy, collaboration, and public service. I understand that school board service requires listening to different perspectives, asking difficult questions, and making informed decisions—even when those decisions are not easy. I am proud of the progress we have made and believe there is still important work ahead.
I support the VCSC Comprehensive Facilities plan. For over two years, I worked with fellow board members, administration, and professional advisors to develop and approve a thoughtful plan that balances student and community needs with the district’s financial realities and declining enrollment. Our current facilities were built to serve 22,000+ students, while enrollment is now below 13,000 and projected to decline further.
No long-term plan is perfect, and we should remain open to adjustments as we learn more. Serving on the Oversight Committee provided an important opportunity for additional review and questions. One area I would consider revisiting is West Vigo High School’s proposed 7th–12th grade configuration. Based on input from parents and teachers, I would be open to a 6th–12th model if financially reasonable, creating greater consistency across the district.
Any changes must prioritize students while maintaining fiscal responsibility. I remain a strong supporter of the VCSC
The School Board has three primary responsibilities: fiscal oversight, policy oversight, and management of the Superintendent. The Board approves the budget, oversees capital projects and contracts, establishes and reviews policy, and hires, supports, directs, and evaluates the Superintendent.
The Board and Superintendent should work closely together on fiscal and policy matters, relying on the administration's expertise while maintaining appropriate oversight. The Board should hire a Superintendent it trusts to lead the corporation and manage day-to-day operations, while the Board remains responsible for asking questions, providing support, establishing goals, and holding the Superintendent accountable.
The ideal relationship is built on trust, communication, respect, and accountability. The Board should not micromanage, but it must maintain its independent oversight role and the appropriate checks and balances.
I believe the best way to keep and bring families back to VCSC is to provide schools and programs that families want to choose. Families are looking for strong academics, safe and welcoming schools, excellent extracurricular activities, and programs that prepare students for their future.
We should continue expanding and promoting opportunities that meet the diverse interests and needs of our students, including career and technical education, advanced academics, fine arts, athletics, and other extracurricular activities. We also need to do a better job of communicating the breadth of opportunities available across VCSC and highlighting the successes of our students and schools.
Ultimately, I want VCSC to be a corporation where families have choices and can find the programs, opportunities, and supportive environment that are right for their children.
In my opinion, one of the biggest challenges facing VCSC is maintaining and growing enrollment while continuing to provide a high-quality education that meets the changing needs of our students and families.
We need to understand why families choose VCSC, why some choose other options, and what we can do better. That means continuing to provide strong academics, career and technical education, fine arts, athletics, extracurricular activities, and innovative programs that give students opportunities to discover their strengths and prepare for life after graduation.
We also need to do a better job of telling our story. We have many outstanding teachers, programs, and student accomplishments, and families need to know about them. Ultimately, VCSC should be a corporation families choose because they believe it provides the opportunities, support, and education their children need to succeed.
