Please describe your priorities for your term in office and your specific qualifications to effectively address those issues.
What do you see as the most pressing housing-related issue in Wisconsin, and what policies, if any, would you support to address the issue?
What redistricting process, if any, do you believe the legislature should put in place before the next national census to ensure fair representation for voters?
What, if anything, will you do to ensure our schools have the resources to improve outcomes for its students, including those with disabilities?
What guardrails, if any, would you support to protect our environment, health, property values, and household budgets from large projects such as hyperscale data centers and Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs)?
My top priority is fighting for the people of the 96th Assembly District. I spent two decades fighting for my constituents and problem-solving on the La Crosse County Board and now I bring those skills and experience to Madison. Wisconsin is in a healthcare affordability crisis. Not only did I introduce BadgerCare Public Option, which would create a state-run insurance alternative at an affordable price for families and small businesses, I also fought to secure funding that prevented the closure of two rural hospitals in Vernon County. The people of the 96th deserve an experienced representative with the know-how to deliver on critical issues like healthcare.
Wisconsin is in an affordability crisis. Everything costs more and that includes housing. Wisconsin must pass a Renters’ Bill of Rights to protect people from abuse by corporate landlords and reduce the number of people at risk of becoming homeless. We also have to take steps to make it easier for Wisconsinites who want to, to purchase homes. Legislation is needed also, to protect folks who live in manufactured homes from predatory rent increases (often charged by out-of-state owners of mobile home parks). AB 1049 was introduced this last session but the majority party did not give it a public hearing or floor vote. I will work with original authors Rep. Emerson and Sen. Smith to reintroduce it and get it passed into law.
I fully support fair maps and am proud to represent the NEW 96th Assembly District as drawn by the Supreme Court. Wisconsinites should not have to rely on lawsuits to get fair representation. I fully support banning all forms of gerrymandering and establishing a nonpartisan redistricting commission such as the one used by our neighbors in Michigan. Voters are supposed to pick their legislators, not the other way around.
The Wisconsin Constitution makes a commitment to provide a comprehensive education to all children. We are failing to live up to this promise. In recent years the Republican majority has failed public school districts and irresponsibly directed over $700 million dollars to voucher schools instead. This two system funding scheme must end so that two thirds funding of public education and fully funding special education in a sum sufficient appropriation can be restored. That is what I am committed to in the next state budget. Our public schools are struggling. Referendums are required in far too many districts just to keep the doors open. Wisconsin absolutely must fulfill its promise to fund K-12 public schools.
I support a moratorium on data center construction until Wisconsin can ensure that our air, water, and soil are being appropriately cared for. I am also proud to have co-authored AB-722 which would establish much needed environmental and consumer protections against abuse by data centers. In my work on the agriculture committee, I have consistently voted to regulate CAFOs and protect small family farms. While CAFOs destroy the environment to turn a quick profit, family farmers value the health of the land, water and air and understand that in the long term, it is in everyone’s best interests to care for it. In my second term I will continue to be a fierce advocate for our environment.
