Affordability and Quality of Life are both critically important and directly impact all residents. Quality of Life means many aspects of our lives. From Police and Fire (public safety) to Parks and overall servicing and maintenance of the city, there is much to focus on and maintain. By being affordable, we help to keep residents in their homes, paying their mortgage or rent/insurance and taxes) while being able to afford their utilities, food, healthcare, clothing, transportation, retirement savings, day to day expenses, emergency expenses and so much more. Providing free community services and events in our parks provides affordable opportunities for individuals and families and brings together our diverse communities.
In July 2023 the City of Oakland Park recently joined the Inter-local Agreement for Solid Waste Disposal and Recyclable Materials Processing Authority of Broward County. On July 15th 2026 Oakland Park signed the ILA Facilities Amendment. Oakland Park has consistent maintained our recycling program and continues to educate our residents on the benefits and requirements of recycling. Those benefits positively impact our wildlife, nature, quality of life and finances. As development applications are received from developers, Oakland Park focuses building in initiatives related to recycling, solar, water reclamation and other environmentally friendly enhancements.
Oakland Park has worked with developers to include affordable housing units and will continue to focus on increasing the supply of affordable housing.
If this situation would occur, urgent meetings will need to be scheduled with the City Manager and staff to identify the best and most fair and efficient way to move forward. Public input would need to review any tentative plan to move forward. Basic services would need to be prioritized and would continue. The City Manager is already beginning to evaluate the options if this would occur and will be making recommendations to the Commission as he determines appropriate. I respectfully leave the drafting of any planning to the City Manager and will discuss his insight and thoughts on potential planning moving forward.
Annually, the Commission funds the Local Government Academy to allow ~25 residents to attend a 10 week course on how our local government operates. We continue to require Neighborhood Participation Meetings allowing residents and other interested individuals the opportunity to learn more about potential future projects that will be submitting applications to the City. We hold workshops as determined appropriate and encourage residents to come to Commission Meetings and speak during Public Comments. Commissioner cellphone numbers and other contact information are published on the website to encourage communications. By attending most community events, I have the opportunity to speak directly with residents on an impromptu basis.
