1) In my district we are facing forced transition from coal generated power. As a traditional energy county that has had coal, nuclear, waste to energy and is now becoming a major host for solar energy production the long term property tax and economic effects of the transition are significant. I will continue to work on trying to find ways to offset the damaging effects of the state required transition.
2) I am very active in working towards managing solid waste to create the best methodologies for long term solutions. I will continue to work in this area.
3) I will continue to be a strong supporter of law enforcement and public safety. I plan to continue to serve on the public safety committees to which I am currently assigned.
The Minnesota Legislature sets the rules for elections which are then administered by the Secretary of State’s office. The number one factor that is needed to create a more secure election process would be changes to our voter registration process at the state legislative level. Requiring every voter to have an ID is essential. As a county we can continue to work to ensure that all eligible voters have that ID. In our county we have always adhered exactly to all requirements set by the state.
The State of Minnesota sets service delivery criteria for mental health services. In recent years multiple unfunded state mandates have placed additional strain on county mental health and social services. As a commisioner I am constantly working to get adequate funding for these necessary services. Minnesota also needs a modern Health and Human Services software system, as the current one is outdated. I’m committed to supporting staff and pushing for needed state level legislative change.
The key to delivering county services while keeping overall costs down is a commitment to constant re analysis of how we operate. During my first term, we have taken a hard look at our service methods, staffing levels, and the condition and use of our physical buildings. This ongoing evaluation has allowed us to make thoughtful adjustments and implement improvements aimed at maintaining efficiency while continuing to reduce expenses. I will continue to advocate for innovation and efficiency.
The Sheriff is the elected chief law enforcement officer in the county. It is the duty of the Sheriff to decide how law enforcement assets are deployed to keep the public safe and deter crime. The county board should always support the Sheriff in the enforcement of all the laws enacted by the state and federal legislature. It is the job of the county board to ensure the Sheriff has the funding necessary to fulfill his role. As a retired Deputy I am a staunch supporter of law enforcement.
I will continue to be active in getting out in the community and meeting with constituents. I am very accessible and work hard to respond to inquiries and concerns that I receive. I attend meetings with local organizations to ensure that I am aware of their concerns and can pass that information to the rest of the board. I have frequently advocated for groups or individuals to help meet our mutual goal, which is to ensure that the quality of life in Sherburne County remains excellent.
