1. Protect Social Security and Medicare. More than 1.1 million Minnesotans rely on these programs. The One Big Ugly Bill attacked these critical programs & reversing those cuts will be my top priority.
2. Lower the cost of essential goods and services. Families are struggling right now as healthcare premiums, gas, and groceries rise faster than their paychecks. I’ll let people buy into Medicare on a sliding scale & have government negotiate drug prices. I’ll also fight to stop the irresponsible war in Iran that is driving up gas, food and fertilizer prices.
3. Stand up for unions and workers. I know firsthand what a union job means for a family. That’s why I’ll fight for a safe workplace, fair wages, and the right to collectively bargain.
I would first address healthcare costs head-on. We need to bring back the ACA subsidies that helped families afford coverage, have government negotiate drug prices, and let people buy into Medicare on a sliding scale. I’ll fight to rein in any President who starts reckless wars abroad that drive up the cost of everything with no strategic goal. We also need to address the housing affordability crisis and childcare provider shortage.
We must take an all-of-the-above energy strategy that increases non-carbon energy sources while keeping costs affordable for working families. I would bring back tax cuts for solar and wind that bring renewable energy, as well as jobs, to the district – Stauber cut these. I’m a proponent of biofuels which we can make right here in Minnesota. We also need to invest in and upgrade our aging energy grid, especially in our rural communities.
My top priority in Congress: reversing the cuts to Social Security and Medicare in the One Big Ugly Bill. Growing up, my family relied on food assistance and Medicaid. Now my parents depend on Medicare and Social Security, and it's still not enough. I'll fight any effort to privatize Social Security, cut benefits, or raise the retirement age. The wealthy should pay their fair share to keep it solvent, and we should explore lowering Medicare eligibility to 50 for physically demanding jobs.
I’ll support automatic voter registration, making voting easier while strengthening accuracy and security. I’ll protect the right to vote and fight disenfranchisement and voting barriers across the country. To make elections more just, I’ll work to get big money out of politics so politicians are accountable to the people, not billionaires and corporate donors. Finally we must protect the workers and volunteers who administer our elections – threats against them cannot be tolerated.
My ultimate responsibility is and will always be to deliver results for the people of the 8th District. I’ll fight for what’s best for the people here, not corporate interests or the connected elite – which is why I will not take a cent of corporate PAC money. I’ll stay accountable by returning home regularly for town halls and showing up across the district to listen and answer to the constituents.
Major changes are needed to restore the Supreme Court as a trusted independent source of constitutional authority. I support a binding code of conduct and increased rules around disclosure. Why shouldn’t the same gift rules that apply to House and Senate members apply to Supreme Court Justices? We also need to end the practice of Justices ruling on their own conflicts of interest and taking unexplained recusals.
