1. Representing the best interests of the citizens of the district. All of them. And nobody else. The people in the middle of the political spectrum currently are unrepresented. 2. Reform, including immigration reform, federal budget reform, health care reform, Social Security and Medicare reform, and reform of Congress itself (term limits, ban of member stock trading). A dysfunctional Congress has failed to address these issues for decades. 3. Addressing economic issues, including inflation and employment. These are the issues affecting the day-to-day lives of the residents of our Third Congressional District.
1. Reduce government spending and debt. 2. Reduce regulation. 3. Promote freedom and free enterprise. 4. Reduce tariffs and other taxes.
I would follow advice from climate scientists and experts (including economists). I would promote diplomacy to encourage other nations’ cooperation with U.S. leadership.
One core role of the federal government is to protect the vulnerable. That is different from ensuring a safety net “for all.” Only those citizens who are unable to provide for themselves should be protected by the federal government. All others can be protected through free enterprise, charity, non-federal agencies, and family resources. The constitutional principle of limited government requires so. Relatedly, the U.S. Government must keep promises to Social Security and Medicare recipients.
To preserve Democracy, we must take steps to increase confidence in our election process. Showing identification to vote is part of that. Paid election judges and monitors, particularly relating to absentee and mail-in ballots, also will increase confidence. Importantly, all losing candidates and all public officials should refrain from provoking or stoking public dissatisfaction with election processes and outcomes.
Represent. Reform. Vote. Those are the basic roles. Congress must fulfill its responsibility for fiscal control, war-making, and passing necessary legislation. It is a disgrace that Congress has denigrated itself through member self-promotion and kneejerk deferring to or opposing whatever a U.S. President does (depending only upon whether the president is in the same political party or not). I would be an independent thinker.
As with elections, steps must be taken to increase confidence in our courts. First, the executive branch should nominate and the U.S. Senate should confirm federal judges based on legal ability and impartiality, rather than ideology. Second, members of both the executive and legislative branches should refrain from stoking public dissatisfaction with judges and juries.
