A judge must be impartial and independent of political pressure. We must also possess legal acumen and use it when deciding cases. Judges must also possess integrity and a willingness to work. We must understand the role goes beyond the courthouse as we lead in our community. Finally, a judge must have patience.
First of all, nearly all of my dockets are available for anyone to attend in person or via WebEx. This "open court" approach ensures every day the public can see the way a judge properly handles dockets, lawyers and litigants. I serve on a number of committees within the judiciary promoting access and transparency. I make myself available for civic education regularly.
