Broadly, I want to put power back into the hands of local communities, families, and small businesses. My specific areas of passion include:
(1)Fiscal Responsibility and Budgetary Reform: I am driven to fix our broken, volatile federal budget process. Our current system of constant government shutdowns and arbitrary debt ceilings threatens economic stability. This policy was meant to constrain spending theoretically, but it has never worked in practice.
(2)American Dream and Wealth-Building: I believe the American Dream is built on homeownership, not a lifetime of renting. Families suffer from inadequate housing supply and corporate interference. We need to move away from rental-subsidy models like Section 8 and replace them with programs that help families build wealth through home equity.
(3) Expanding veterans benefits by exempting the first $200,000 of income from income tax and expanding VA health benefits to be covered under "Vetscare" through Medicare, fully paid.
I would like to address rural hospital closures:
(1) Creating Vetscare to allow vets to get coverage through Medicare in their local areas instead of having only to rely on VA hospitals. This would create a new patient care demand in rural areas, where many vets are concentrated, giving sustainable demand to rural hospitals.
(2) Repeal the prohibition against Physicians owning hospitals and allow them to purchase into partnerships for hospital ownership. We could incentivize this with limited med-school loan forgiveness if they remain a partner in this hospitals for at least 5 to 10 years. The forgiveness incentive could be called "Docs for America" on the model of "Teach for America."
(3) Allow farmers and small businesses to purchase plans with HMOs/PPOs through unified association health care plans. This will enable them to bulk purchase and negotiate premiums with the same strength as large companies and pool resources to bring down costs and guarantee lower drug prices.
