Submitted Biography My name is Alex Ryckman. I want to be part of a movement to make Colorado a place for everyone to be welcome, safe, and ambitious. I am running because I want a better Colorado for my students and my daughters. We must start funding our schools, provide for our communities and support workers. I believe that our elections should be open and accessible to working people who are connected and have a pulse on the community. I am not a career politician, I am running because I am passionate and care. I am a proud member of a union and grateful that I have a contract that affords me leave to serve in public office and I am asking for your support to do just that.

To me it is important that people not only listen but that they communicate. We are doing the work to carry the voice of our district and that means that folks will have questions. As your representative I am committed to continuing to ensure that you know not just my voting record but the why behind it. I am here to learn with you and to answer questions as they come up. I think that the ability and willingness to sit down and have discussion is lacking and that it is a trait we need more of in office.
Required, no. But I do think that we do not do ourselves favors as a party when we run policy and don't at least try to build common ground. I believe that I am running to represent all of my district and not just those that agree with me on everything. But I am a teacher. I work daily to help students think critically, grow their understanding and also find spaces they can agree in. We have to work to build unity in the state and also be willing to explain our beliefs when folks ask why. I understand why non-negotiables exist and I myself have my own stances that I would not compromise. However, our unity and solidarity together is important for us to move forward together.
I care deeply about fully funding our public education. The voters of Colorado asked to have our funding to schools increased and we have not had a fully funded graduating for over 35 years. If my daughter is lucky and we continue to fully fund schools she will be the first graduating class (in 2040) to have a fully funded PK-12 experience since 1989. I also want to ensure we as a state work with our Department of Corrections to support our systems and ensure that their is not just funding but real accountability for our DOC that is charged with caring for inmates and their rehabilitation.
I trust our election processes and procedures and think as a state we are a leader in election integrity.
