As a clinical psychologist who has worked in healthcare for the past 30 years, securing Americans' access to healthcare, including mental/behavioral health services, is not just a passion—it is a calling.
Every public policy issue, whether education, healthcare, national security, or affordability, connects back to mental health in some way. Americans experience stress, anxiety, and depression when they cannot afford monthly expenses, worry about their safety, struggle to buy a home, or fear their children may not be able to afford one someday. The same is true when people believe the tax system only benefits the wealthy or when they lose trust in their government to protect them and uphold the Constitution.
Who better than a clinical psychologist to help lead us through this time? I chose a career centered on listening, building trust, solving problems, and helping people improve their lives. I would bring those same skills and values to Congress.
Our current immigration policies need to be reformed, but I will focus on the steps I would NOT take as a representative to “reform” them. I believe our current administration’s handling of immigration policy is not only ineffective, but it is inhumane. As a member of Congress, I would not disregard provisions stated in our U.S. Constitution related to naturalization, birthright citizenship, or depriving a person in our country from due process. I would not go against my Christian values and scripture that condemns the mistreatment, oppression, and withholding of justice for “foreigners.” I would not refer to immigrants as “aliens” or support concepts like “remigration.” I would never support separating children from their parents or denying humans necessary medical care. Any committee assembled to reform our immigration policies needs to include steps for recruiting individuals who are serious about reforming our immigration process, a system this country was built on.
Congress must continue protecting the integrity, accessibility, and public trust of our elections and re-assuring the Americans that our elections are secure and remain a model for the world. To strengthen the integrity of elections, Congress must overturn the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision. We also need to inspire more participation in elections by making elections easier to understand and more accessible to voters.
I trust our mail-in ballot elections. I have voted by mail since 2003, when I moved overseas with my now husband during his USAF service. As a write-in candidate for CD4, I would be honored to earn your vote. Write in “Preston” within the “US Congress - District 4” section on your primary ballot to support a mom, military spouse, a therapist, someone who understands what keeps Americans up at night. Our democracy works best when elected leaders understand the experiences and struggles of the people they serve. Learn more at www.preston4congress.com
