To address climate Change we have create or develop more community renewable energy projects (solar on roofs, microgrids, etc.), perhaps through public ownership or cooperatives; so that benefits (jobs, lower energy costs) flow locally.
We also have to expand parks, tree cover, community gardens; upgrade waterfronts, if applicable; ensure equitable access to safe, healthy outdoor spaces.
In addition, by implementing explicit requirement that polluting projects undergo community review; health impact assessments; ensure that marginalized communities get strong representation; reparative policies for legacy pollution.
We also need more intentional climate resilience planning. My district in the Bronx is coastal and flood-prone. We have to prepare for climate change: floodwalls, coastal defenses, elevation of critical infrastructure, planning for heat islands.
New York is racially and economically diverse, yet inequity shows up in tangible ways such as disparities in school resources or healthcare access. We have to ensure that every neighborhood receives fair treatment and equal access to opportunity and investment.
We need to create or amend policies that will support underserved communities ensuring that there are equal rights and justice. We have to have more intentional anti-discrimination polices and protections. We also need to ensure that our justice system is being actually being just. We need more representation in the Judicial System, from the lawyers to the Judges.
Social and Racial justice is also economical. We need more investments in marginalized communities to ensuring that their quality of life is equal to the majority. That would be making our streets safe, more investment in the public schools, supporting the small businesses and giving the community all basic amenities they need to thrive in the 4th Economy.
It starts with Education. Educating New Yorkers about the Redistricting Commission and the role that they play in the political process. Following with more engagement with the public to participate in the hearings and understand the activities.
The State Legislature will then have create policies protecting New York from maps being redrawn that do not reflect the demographics of the communities. We have to ensure that every community will be represented and have advocates in the Legislature.
We also have to review the Redistricting Commission to ensure that the are fair and non biased practices.
