Since 2021 I have been a member of the Sandstone Township Planning Commission. Through my involvement there I became familiar with the Township Board and have happily stepped in to serve this term. I am a responsible, committed member of the Board. Responsibility to tax payers drives my questions and decisions. A graduate of Hillsdale College, I understand that government is by the people for the people. I have been involved in community development since joining my neighborhood youth group in middle school and hope to continue my lifelong commitment to community here in Sandstone.
I am running for this office to finish the term for which I was nominated. I bring a commitment to transparency and fiduciary responsibility to every meeting. As a member of many boards and committees I have deep experience in group discussion and decision making. I understand that thoughtful consideration is at the heart of every decision we make, knowing that compromise should always favor the public and not the institution. As an elected official I believe in making smart decisions for the public good that outlast my time on the board.
The important challenge facing Townships is erosion of local control by State government. State actions like PA 233 are a gross affront to communities. We must resist efforts to strip Townships of decision-making authority on controversial topics like utility scale solar installations. Townships must be free decide. Regular contact with State Representatives and Senators is paramount. Tax payers should feel free to voice concerns and expect to be heard. As frustrating as it can be for landowners and utilities, continued public engagement at meetings is at the heart of American government. People must stay engaged.
The most pressing issue for sheriff presence and the Parma/Sandstone Fire Department is budgetary. Taxpayers have voted for millages because we want service at a specific price- no more, no less. We have a great contract with our Sheriff’s department for additional coverage and I am pleased with responsiveness of the Sheriff’s office and Deputies assigned to our area. The Parma/Sandstone Fire Department budget needs careful consideration and oversight. Things are gradually improving, but creating a new inter-governmental agreement that ensures continued fire and EMS service to both townships within budget has been a huge challenge.
