Why did you decide to run for this office? How have your training, professional experience, and interests prepared you to serve as Governor of Alabama?

What is your long-term plan to address healthcare needs in Alabama? Do you have a plan to sustainably support the Alabama Medicaid Agency or do you have other ideas?

In your opinion, do racial and cultural diversity play a role in attracting businesses and encouraging economic growth? If so, what specific actions would you take to ensure that Alabama is neither actually nor perceived as hostile to diverse cultures and beliefs, and remains competitive in attracting businesses and talent? Do you think climate change is impacting our state economy and quality of life? If so, what actions will you undertake to mitigate that impact and support Alabama’s citizens?

What actions, if any, would you take as Governor to improve conditions within the Alabama Department of Corrections? For example, how will you address mental health issues, reduce violence and recidivism rates, and eliminate racial disparity in granting parole?

What’s the most important thing for Alabamians to know about you?

I’ve spent my life working with people in classrooms, churches, and communities, and I kept seeing the same struggle over and over. Good people doing everything right and still falling behind. That stayed with me. At some point, I realized if I really wanted to help change that, I had to step up and be part of the solution. I have served in many capacities a page to a State Representative while in college, to a variety of engineering an management roles both in and outside of the United States, serving as a hospital board member, as well as both a pastor and bishop. I have been the Democratic nominee in Alabama for U.S. Representative D5, Lt. Governor, and U.S. Senator, so he is no stranger to the challenges of Alabama politics.
Alabamians are entitled to exceptional healthcare. I support Medicaid expansion and will do that immediately upon taking office. I also plan to introduce legislation that helps fill the healthcare/Medicaid coverage gap that exists for women in Alabama. Additionally, I plan to leverage the bargaining power of 40 million Medicare beneficiaries to negotiate better drug prices while also providing beneficiaries with an option to obtain drug coverage directly from Medicare rather than a private plan. I fully support repeal of the 45 percent “trigger” which creates a fund warning and ultimately requires that cuts be made to Medicare as well as unfairly place the burden of Medicare on working people.
Yes, it plays a meaningful role. Businesses want labor depth and diversity of talent, including immigrants and bilingual workers. We must improve and simplify the permitting and licensing processes with consistent tax policies. We must ensure equal treatment and avoid targeted legislation that is based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. Transparency and consistency is needed. We are seeing impacts from increased flooding, storm surges, and instability in weather patterns. Infrastructure improvements, especially in rural areas, will be key. We will also support smarter development in costal areas, vouchers for for energy efficient home improvements, and diversity of energy including renewable energy sources.
Prison reform is an extremely important issue. We can’t keep ignoring this problem. It’s about safety, but it’s also about dignity and accountability. We need to deal with overcrowding, improve conditions, and invest in programs that help people turn their lives around. If we want safer communities, we have to focus on rehabilitation, not just punishment. I outline my plan as P.T.S.D. - Presumptive pardons for aging incarcerated citizens that qualify as nonviolent. Technical violations need to be capped to prevent extreme measures taken for minor offenses. Second looks for those denied parole to ensure there are clear and fair reasons. Dashboards will provide transparency and visibility of populations, status, and other key information.
My life has been dedicated to serving others, and I believe I have the skills to help bring forward a stronger vision for what Alabama can become. I’ve always been resilient, resourceful, and able to make the most out of limited resources. Through experience and perseverance, I’ve been shaped and strengthened by challenges, and that has only deepened my sense of purpose. I believe vision, combined with lived experience, creates real hope. I’m asking for a fair opportunity to show what Alabama can achieve when we aim higher and work together.

I decided to run for governor in 2022 because I heard an "outcry" for justice, and I answered the call. Because this call is prevalent in me today, I continue to run as if the 2022 race never ended. The 2022 race was my training for this season. I learned to listen, watch how my opponents moved, watch the constituents, and pray for the guidance of Our Creator. Since 2022, I've joined several organizations, namely Alabama Arise, SCLC, NAACP, ACLU, The Legal Focus Group of Alabama, Alabama New South Alliance Coalition, The Poor People's Campaign, and the Alabama Democratic Conference, for a better understanding of people's needs and policies.
I desire to expand Medicaid to cover all low-income families. Expanding Medicaid will help the 760,000 individuals below the federal poverty level. With the assistance of the 'LOTTERY,' money will be available to open hospitals in rural areas, provide ambulatory services (land and air), and provide emergency medical training. Further, due to the expansion, medical resident students will be allowed to practice under the tutelage of a senior physician, such as under the guise of "internship." This will give the interns experience and reduce or waive their college fees.
Cultural Diversity and economic growth go hand-in-hand. Our leaders are not accepting of other cultures, ethnicities, and genders, and to change the hostility that dwells in a person's heart will take an act of God; however, as governor, it will be my job to bridge our people by explaining that although we are different, we are much alike in many ways. I see us as brothers and sisters. Therefore, I will demand that we treat one another as such and accept the beauty that each of us possesses. Climate change is a part of life. It affects our ability to think, breathe, and function in various ways. Nevertheless, the most important change we must accept is that we're in it together, and therefore we must work together for the good of all.
NOTE: It is hard to expect a person who's been caged for 5 or 45 years not to expect a difference in behavior. However, as governor, I propose reconstructing the system by forming a "Justice League" comprised of a lawyer, a medical physician, a psychiatrist, a vocational rehabilitation counselor, a social worker, a probation officer, and a neighborhood officer. The League will be responsible for the firing and hiring of staff: warden, guards, etc., and for hiring the Pardons and Parole Board. a lie detector test will be part of process along with a psychological evaluation to help determine who is eligible to work in the prison system. Restoration ranches will be built in the four corners of the state to help transition the incarcerated.
The most important thing for all Alabamians to know is that I love my state dearly and will do everything within my power to bring healing mentally/physically, economically, educationally, and judicially.
