Nevada State Controller (4 yr terms, no term limits) The State Controller serves as Nevada’s chief fiscal watchdog and is responsible for overseeing the state’s accounting systems and financial reporting. This office processes payments to state agencies, manages the state payroll system, and ensures that public funds are accurately tracked and reported. The Controller also works to maintain transparent financial records and safeguard against misuse of taxpayer dollars. Because accurate reporting and financial oversight are essential to ethical governance and public trust, this race plays an important role in promoting accountability, transparency, and responsible management of Nevada’s resources.

The job of the Controller is transparency and accountability. The most important role I can fill in this capacity is that of the referee. When the Treasurer, Governor, and Legislature set a budgetary agenda, the Controller must ensure it is carried out in accordance with that budget. The important thing is to flag problems and be solutions oriented. This means if the money in the state’s coffers cannot account for a budget plan, that plan must be amended in a collaborative manner. Ultimately, the Controller is responsible to the people, and this means making sure voter approved monetary policy is being followed.
The Controller oversees the state annual reporting of our finances - making sure our tax dollars are going where they are supposed to, when they are supposed to. This also includes the Controller being responsible for collecting back taxes owed to the state. That is a role that must be taken very seriously. When people know that everyone is playing by the rules, and all are paying their fair share, people trust that their government has their back. Making sure our money is being handled ethically and responsibly is the first step towards a Nevada that has faith in its institutions and governance.
While the Controller cannot directly enforce budgetary policy, as the referee my goal is to flag potential issues before they become real problems. With accurate and timely annual reporting, our leaders in the Governor, Treasurer, and Legislative offices can make sure critical services are funded and Nevada’s infrastructure grows stronger into the future.
