The two most critical issues to be addressed in my city include fiscal oversight and civility for not only the first two months but rather, always. Transparency of budget and responsible spending are a must where residents and the city's needs are considered and protected. It is critical to ensure that every expenditure is justified. This shows respect for taxpayers, a commitment to good governance and a vision for a stronger, more stable Tamarac. It is additionally critical for constituents to have a voice that is heard, respected and valued. Collaboration and courtesy are always signs that strengthen a community and reflect the values of the people served
We have a trash crisis in Broward County. This is a concern that warrants greater attention than is currently given due to the severity of the issue. The newly formed Solid Waste Authority with its Master Plan for 28 cities provides opportunities for cities to work together to centralize dealing with waste. Combining efforts to educate people how to recycle is critical. Thus, training, volunteer groups and additional information needs to be disseminated. The public is confused regarding items that can and cannot be recycled. This information must be clear and concise. Reduction of solid waste through training and the collaboration of the Solid Waste Master Plan will provide a clear path for improvement and collaboration.
The Live Local Act is a comprehensive strategy which has been designed to address affordable housing needs. The policies that should be considered to meet the needs for affordable and attainable housing require ensuring that a certain number of housing opportunities are available. This should be in place so those who are employed in those cities can live in said city. Policies need to be in place to enable police, fire, teachers, nurses and other employees can afford to live where they are employed. I advocate for an appropriate number affordable housing units be available in every development where needed.
I am a strong proponent of responsible spending! It is time to "tighten our belts/budgets", I constantly question the viability of certain expenditures since our taxes pay for city services. I promote the following to decrease budget shortfalls:
1. lower the amount of funds appropriated to commissioners for travel
2. decrease discretionary funds allotted to commissioners ($25,000+ given to each commissioner)
3. eliminate community liaisons
4. decrease the egregious amounts spent on events and top entertainers
5. certain projects should be put "on hold"
The above recommendations need to be taken under serious consideration in an effort to maintain the city needs if the property taxes are eliminated.
I attend all commission meetings and events that take place in my city. I actively engage in clubs for all diverse groups in an effort for total city inclusivity. Residents participate in surveys to share opinions. I am an active participant on FaceBook, Tamarac Talk, and additional social media. I encourage others to participate in these activities as well. I urge civility and respect to be provided to all commissioners and residents. Residents must have their voices heard and respected and valued to feel part of the community. I stand by the promise of integrity, civility, collaboration and accountability.
