During my first two terms, I enacted meaningful policies directly affecting residents such as updating city zoning (last updated over 50 years ago), updating park impact fees (last updated over 30 years ago), inclusionary housing, rent stabilization, improving the first-time home buyers program, and creating a plan to double the community services budget to $10 million to ensure more equitable programming for youth, seniors, and families. I also institutionalized a service that allows me to provide both cooked food to Pomona residents five days a week and provide fresh groceries five days a week. In addition, we implemented infrastructure improvements in each of the seven parks in my district. If reelected, the following are my top 3 priorities:
1. Further institutionalize the partnerships I have built with community leaders that help me address families’ basic needs, especially with rising costs of daily essentials, higher costs of healthcare, and attacks from ICE on our community.
2. Create policy that will further address the progress we have made in housing to further protect renters and facilitate the pathway to homeownership
3. Make impactful decisions regionally with partners in all aspects. Staying close to labor and participating when needed, advancing equity on the boards I sit on, especially those in transportation like Foothill Transit and Metrolink, as well as providing community members the tools they need to survive the affordability crisis.
I was born in Guadalajara, Mexico and, at 8 months old, my family and I moved to Pomona, where I have lived the majority of my life. I inherited a dedicated, blue-collar work ethic from my father and mother. At the age of 15, I got my first job as a box boy at a local supermarket in Pomona where I learned the meaning of hard work, integrity, and reliability. I am a product of Pomona schools and have dedicated my life to giving back to the community. I initially ran for council in 2018 because I saw an unmet need in my community. The people of District 2 needed an advocate that was going to be present, responsive to their needs, solution-driven, and committed to action. Given my background in management in the private sector, I knew I would provide a valuable and unique perspective in how the city is run and decisions are made. I was first elected in November 2018 and then reelected in 2022. I have worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life of all residents and businesses in Pomona. I have a prosperous vision of how Pomona can continue to grow through community engagement, safety, and economic development. I decided to run for a third term because, despite the strides we have made in the last eight years, I believe my work is not yet done. I want to continue the conversations and growth we’ve had as a city with residents, businesses, and regional partners and be a voice on the council for growth.
