Improving the quality of life for working families in California is a cornerstone of my platform. As the cost of housing continues to skyrocket while wages remain stagnant, we need to do more to ensure that working families don't just get by – but thrive. As the daughter of union members – and a union member myself – I understand the importance of uplifting our workers to ensure they are treated with the dignity they deserve. In the Assembly, I'll fight to raise wages, improve workplace protections, and expand healthcare and retirement benefits for the workers in our state. Building a more equitable public education system will be another one of my top priorities in the State Assembly. Too many of our schools are under-funded and under-staffed. We need systemic change, and we can accomplish this by fully funding public education, increasing pay for classroom teachers, expanding the use of technology in the classroom, bolstering STEM courses, increasing extracurricular programs and the arts, after-school programs, making higher education more accessible for all, and so much more. I'll also continue to advocate for equity in early care and early learning, so that our students are empowered with the development tools they need to succeed from an early age. I am also committed to addressing our state's housing and homelessness crises. In the Assembly, I will work to cut red tape so that we can build more affordable housing, and work to expand shelters and mental health services so that we can address the root causes of homelessness.
I grew up in Compton, California in a family of public servants – my mother worked for the City of Compton and my stepfather served as a fire captain for the Compton Fire Department and was president of the Firefighters Union. Growing up in a union household ignited my passion serving others and my commitment to uplifting working families. I became a teacher almost immediately after graduating from college, and went on to spend over 15 years serving the Watts community as Principal at the Maxine Waters Early Education Center and Ethel Bradley Early Education Center. I was elected to the Compton Unified School District Board of Trustees in 2022, and currently serve as Legislative Representative of the Board. I'm also proud to serve as a current member and former Vice President of Teamsters Local 2010 / Associated Administrators of Los Angeles Union, where I played a critical role in securing raises for educators, providing funding and support for teachers and students during the pandemic, and advocating for defined work hours, among other accomplishments. These experiences have given me an in-depth understanding of the most pressing issues facing our communities, as well as deeply rooted relationships in the district, spanning both my time in public education and as an elected leader. In the Assembly, I will advocate tirelessly for every student, worker and family across California.
As someone who has served communities like Watts and Compton for over 15 years, I've seen firsthand how displacement and housing insecurity destabilize families. In the Assembly, I'll support bold policies to expand deeply affordable housing, strengthen protections for renters, and prevent gentrification from pushing out communities of color. To address the housing crisis, I will work to cut red tape and streamline permitting processes so that we can rapidly build more affordable housing for working families. I will also advocate for programs that create pathways to homeownership, so that every family in California has the opportunity to build long-term stability. I will always champion policies that ensure families aren't forced to choose between paying rent and putting food on the table.
As someone with over 30 years of experience in public education, I have seen firsthand how the right investments can transform educational outcomes for low-income students. My approach focuses on comprehensive support from early childhood through higher education. First, we must ensure equity in early care and early learning, so that our students are empowered with the development tools they need to succeed from an early age. This includes expanding access to universal preschool and strengthening support for family child care providers who serve many low-income families. For K-12 education, we need systemic change through fully funding public education, increasing pay for classroom teachers to attract and retain quality educators in high-need schools, and expanding access to technology, STEM courses, the arts, and career-technical education programs. After-school and extracurricular programs are particularly crucial for low-income students who may lack these opportunities outside of school. We must also make higher education more accessible for all by expanding financial aid for students of color and first-generation college students, and working toward debt-free higher education for low- and middle-income families. These strategies work. During my time on the School Board, Compton Unified posted the #1 graduation rate in L.A. County and the #1 test scores in California among similar schools thanks to intentional investments in student success. In the Assembly, I'll work to adopt these proven strategies statewide so that every child in California receives the education they deserve, regardless of their family's income.
I support a comprehensive approach that prioritizes safe drinking water for vulnerable communities while building resilience across California. I would champion increased grants and financing for Human Right to Water Projects, which deliver water to disadvantaged communities during both normal and dry years. These critical projects should receive streamlined review processes to accelerate implementation. To expand our water supply, I support reducing regulatory barriers and increasing funding for new technologies like desalination, while removing permitting obstacles for vital water storage projects that reduce our reliance on Colorado River and State Water Project imports. I will work to provide resources and infrastructure to ensure all communities have access to safe drinking water, while collaborating with local leaders and farmers to maintain agricultural sustainability during droughts, building long-term resilience for all Californians.
