As outlined in Section 3.05 of the City Charter, the responsibility of the mayor is as follows: “The Mayor shall preside at meetings of the City Council, shall be recognized as head of the City government for all ceremonial purposes and by the Governor for purposes of military law, but shall have no administrative duties.”
Outside of an emergency, the only responsibility/privilege the mayor has is to be the head of ceremonies and preside over city council meetings. The highest priority in these duties is to run an efficient business meeting for city council. Sticking to procedure, timelines, and keeping the meeting focused and on topic are the ways to make meetings run efficiently. I commit to running meetings as efficiently as possible.
We all come from different backgrounds and life experiences that shape the way we think and the opinions we have. Working with people who I disagree with is just part of being in any group or organization. Civilized communities work together regardless of disagreements, that is what democracy is all about. It takes a majority vote to accomplish anything. It is okay to disagree as long as we do so respectfully, and we accept what the majority decision is. I will continue to show respect to my fellow council members and to work with them, not against them, when important decisions need to be made. We may not always agree, but we should always be respectful of other opinions and the decision of the majority.
I make decisions based on data and information. We start with a Strategic Plan, created with the community’s input, and updated every five years, that guides everything the city does. We then make more granular plans for departments and projects to accomplish the goals in the Strategic Plan. All of these recommendations go into the creation of a budget to fund the incremental improvements needed to plan for growth. Planning for growth comes down to planning at a high level and then at a more granular level, and then sticking to the plans. I prioritize planning and data to plan for growth. It is important that we stick to the plan and not get distracted by a few noisy groups or individuals.
