Thanks for clicking on voter information about myself as an incumbent Montana state senator serving my 12th year in the legislature. I was born in Wilmington, DE and grew up in the Philadelphia, PA area. My mom's family were coal miners in NE PA and I saw first hand the depressing social effects of big companies abandoning communities when they and hard working folks no longer served them. I work hard every day to protect hard working Montanans and my motivation stems from those early life experiences. How did I get to Montana? I got lucky by marrying a Montana man. We raised our son here and I've been a Montanan for nearly 23 years. I'm retired from my day job doing public information for three different Montana departments.
The three most important issues that will confront us in the 2027 Montana legislative session are sales tax, data centers, and water scarcity. I strongly oppose sales tax, unregulated data centers, and depletion of our scarce water resources because we need more housing. I refuse to impose a sales tax until we fix our broken tax policy that's rigged towards benefitting corporations and uber wealthy individuals. We must stop abusing and skirting the permitting process for water rights, and we must require more sustainable housing growth within existing infrastructure. Data centers must be highly regulated to prevent financial burdens from falling on the backs of residential ratepayers and deplete water.
We must make our state tax system more progressive, make sure mega corporations and upper income brackets pay their fair share. We must reinstate those Montanans who were erroneously kicked off Medicaid, enable eligibility for more Montanans, and work for Medicare for all. Lack of affordable housing is another big problem. We must cap rents, address renter concerns, regulate landlord abuses of tenants, hold developers accountable for affordable housing if they receive tax breaks, and continue to build more housing stock that safe, affordable, and within reach of everyday Montanans. Also, we need to subsidize with state dollars increases in wages, especially for essential human services like childcare, older adult care, public education
Montana elections are secure. We must not victimize ourselves to witch hunts. We must do all possible to make voting as accessible as possible. Voting is our fundamental right in a democracy and we must not succumb to forces that suppress the vote, such as fear tactics and unjust measures to keep people from voting. We must support same day voter registration, online voter registration, even online voting. We must retain mail in ballots. Regarding money in elections, I support public funding of campaigns to replace big money private donor systems. I support the ballot initiative against dark money in elections that will be on the ballot to repeal Citizens United in Montana.
