I was born in Decatur, IL in 1962. I moved to Montana in 1990 because of its beautiful public lands and its community spirit. I am a retired teacher with a B.S. in Special Ed. and a Master of Ed. degree from MSU-Billings. I have lived in Billings for 36 years. I taught in the Laurel and Billings Public Schools in both special ed. and regular ed. classrooms. I know what a quality education system requires for success. I was a teacher leader and a building rep. for my teacher's union. I have advocated for quality public schools at the Montana Legislature. I am educated on issues important to my district and I have many connections from this work that will make me an effective Legislator in Helena.
The most important issue is protecting and preserving the Montana Constitution. There are many attempts to undermine our Constitution, such as limiting voting rights, limiting rights to privacy, directing public funds to private schools, interfering with ballot initiative process, violations of free speech and most importantly, attempts to change our non-partisan judicial courts. In addition to those basic rights that are under attack, our constitutional right to a quality public education, a clean and healthy environment and preserving our public lands are also vulnerable. Maintaining and preserving all of these constitutional rights is definitely my number one priority.
Making Montana affordable for all is another major priority. The cost of healthcare, housing, childcare, utilities, and groceries are all unsustainable, along with the burden our legislature is placing on city and county taxpayers to fund basic services like schools and public safety. I will fight for expanded healthcare and mental health services. I will work to make day care more affordable. I will work to pass funding for education, including Pre-K. I will work to make housing affordable with rezoning & incentives for building affordable housing. Corporations, utility companies and the ultra- wealthy in Montana are not paying their fare share of taxes. I will work to make our tax structure equitable.
I believe that the Transparent Election Initiative (I-194) is the best way to reduce the role of money in politics. I have gathered signatures for this myself, and I believe it is necessary to preserve our Democracy and reduce the power of corporations and wealthy individuals in our elections. I also support CI-133 because it will protect Montana’s ballot initiative process from government interference and limit the interference that has already occurred in signature gathering and the approval process. And finally, I support CI-132 which will maintain our non-partisan judicial elections which is imperative for preserving impartiality in our courts. We need it to hold the government accountable when they attempt to suppress our votes.
