They hold the initial hearings in many types of serious criminal cases, and try criminal cases, including many first-time DUI/DWI and other misdemeanor cases which carry relatively less serious penalties. They also have jurisdiction over some types of civil cases (e.g., landlord/tenant and contracts) in which the amount sought is less than $10,000. Term: Four years; no term limits.

3. What would be the most effective methods to improve Magistrate Court procedures and efficiency?
4. What other information would you like voters to know about you?
With a background in federal law enforcement until my retirement from the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, and over five years of service as a Detective with the Portales Police Department, I took the bench to serve the people of Roosevelt County in 2019. Since then, I have continued my professional development through studies with the National Judicial College, annual judicial training, Drug Treatment Court training, and ongoing self‑study.
I face two key challenges as a Magistrate Judge. First is helping connect people with services and community resources when needed, including Pretrial Services, the Misdemeanor Compliance Program, Treatment Court, and local organizations such as Hartley House, the VFW, the Ministerial Alliance, and United Way. Second, and most rewarding, is helping people better understand how the Magistrate Court works. Many are unfamiliar with pretrial detention motions, conditions of release, and the path a case takes to trial, as well as the constitutional and criminal procedure changes implemented in 2016. This creates valuable opportunities to educate defendants and families about the purpose and function of the Magistrate Court.
My experience working on the Forms Committee, training new judges, and reducing reliance on paper has improved court efficiency. I also support the use of remote court appearances, which increases participation while lowering costs for citizens, detention facilities, and law enforcement. By listening to court staff and treating them as experts, I continue to find practical ways to improve processes and better serve the public.
This role represents a lifetime investment that began with my early work at an abuse shelter on Kadena Air Base in Japan. I deeply value the opportunity to serve at the pleasure of the people of Roosevelt County and seek to continue my career in service to the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution and laws of New Mexico.
