Dona Ana County Magistrate Judge Division 4
Magistrates are judges in limited jurisdiction courts. They hold the initial hearings in many types of serious criminal cases, and try criminal cases, including many first-time DUI/DWI and other misdemeanor cases which carry relatively less serious penalties. They also have jurisdiction over some types of civil cases (e.g., landlord/tenant and contracts) in which the amount sought is less than $10,000. Term: Four years; no term limits.

BRYAN MICHAEL GELECKI
(Dem)
If elected, what will you do to decrease the backlog of court cases?
What improvements, if any, are needed in the Magistrate Courts?
What skills and knowledge do you bring to the position?
Most Magistrate cases are resolved in less than 6 months. We have strict timelines we have to adhere to which helps minimize any backlog or delay in resolving cases.
We are the largest Magistrate Court in the State by a considerable margin. While there are always areas in which we can improve our service to the community, changes are difficult to implement because they would have to be made at the State level, and most of the other Magistrate Courts lack the resources and staff to implement major changes.
I strive to treat everyone who appears in front of me with respect. I never want anyone to leave my courtroom feeling like they were unheard or feeling like they have unanswered questions.
