White Settlement Independent School District School Board, Trustee Place 6
Trustees are elected to specific positions but represent their entire independent school district and have the following responsibilities mandated by State and Federal laws: select and employ the superintendent, manage public schools, establish operating policies, monitor expenses, adopt and approve a budget, and adopt employment policies. Additionally, they have the authority to set tax rates, levy and collect taxes, buy and sell property, exercise eminent domain, accept donations, charge fees, and call bond elections. Trustees elect their own officers: President or Chair, (Vice president or vice chair), Secretary and Treasurer.

Have served on the White Settlement ISD School Board for 15 years. Served 1 year as board secretary and 10 years as board vice president.
Have presented training seminars to National School Board Convention 5 times.
I recognize opportunities for our school district to improve. Academics have been average compared to the state, and a stronger support and emphasis on core subjects is non-negotiable.
I have advocated reading and math comprehension on grade level by 3rd grade. As a result, we have opened the Early Learners Academy for pre-K and Kindergarten to prepare them to be learners in elementary.
I recognize that there are many ways to learn, but I strongly believe in learning and doing being combined.
Schools should be compliant with the law. If law enforcement is necessary for any reason, then representatives should be present.
However, under my previous work on the school board, we introduced a school guardian program to allow teachers and admins to carry weapons for protection of our schools. Guardians are required to complete extensive gun range and scenario training to be part of the program. With guardians and police officers in place, our schools are very safe.
Public input is part of every meeting that we have. Before we consider business we hear the concerns of citizens.
Beginning this year the school board began reviewing library books to be purchased. At the meeting to approve the books, I was the only board member who had reviewed the list and found questionable books that should be removed. As a result of my work, the approval was tabled, and we have since established an action committee to more thoroughly review all books as an additional step before the list is brought to the board for review. Books should be educational and support community values.
The most important issues involve producing graduates who are ready to be successful in the world. To do this we must have strong academic programs in place. I have advocated that our annual superintendent evaluation be centered around academic progress of our students. We must fix this area before we focus on anything else.
