We have a duty to ensure we protect our future water needs by recruiting responsible businesses, and industries that are not high in water use, ensure they use clean water conservation technology, and that they find ways to innovate arid friendly economic development efforts. Some of these include Xeriscaping, use of smart irrigation systems and rainwater harvesting. We must also be more intentional about influencing our local governments to develop more water conservation ordinances, offer more public outreach information around water conservation methods such as using native, drought tolerant plants, reduce high water use grass lawns and use native grasses, water during optimal times, and use water efficient appliances.
Same as #3. And additionally, we should intentionally recruit economic development projects that transparently disclose actual water use, source of their water use, ways in which they will use water conservation technology, how they will ensure local communities they locate in will benefit from their project without exploiting the workforce, their natural resources and what they will do to help these communities thrive in education, in career paths, in healthcare, in all other public services these projects will contribute to directly. A checklist should be required for these projects to sign off on their commitment to uplift these communities in all areas and their incentive packages should be evaluated based on meeting the checklists.
We as legislators have a duty to require insurance companies offer lower costs, lower co-pays, require no prior authorizations and offer more expansive plans and services and in multiple languages. We also have a duty to ensure our constituents have more community primary care clinics by funding more, and ensure there are no cuts to Medicaid, we must expand and fund services covered by Medicaid, recruit and retain medical students to UNMH School of Medicine, create more pathways from public school to medical school with onsite training, internships at community and school based clinics and we must fund more community/primary health clinics, and promote community based home health education visits.
