I completed the New Mexico State Police academy in 2002. I worked as a State Police officer from 2002 to 2018. I worked for Lordsburg City Police as a Patrolman from 2018 to 2021. In 2022 I was elected Sheriff of Hidalgo County where I have served for 3 years and 4 months to date.
I have made changes to the department geared towards Community and school involvement as a priority. I have promoted and hired people who I believe support my direction for the agency.
Weather related crashes are a big issue throughout the summer months. Drug use and distribution throughout the county is a big concern.
We started the DARE program back up here in Hidalgo with hopes that preventative work from us will help prevent negative results for our children in the future.

Weather is not something we can control but we are proactive in attempting to have measures in place to deal with road closures during wind/dust events with a goal of no fatalities during these events.
On a yearly basis, Deputies receive excellent training concerning dealing with people in crisis. This training does help Deputies deal with these types of situations however it seems that once we have done our part, the system above us, continuously fails and returns the person in crisis back to the streets where it requires us to deal with them repeatedly. We have transported individuals to treatment/medical facilities only to have them pushed out the door and returned to the streets without treatment. This greatly enhances the chances that a very negative interaction will occur; the entire system should be held accountable not just Law Enforcement. Our training can only get them to the professionals they need we cannot treat them.
