I have over 40 years of local and state government experience, serving in such capacities as Chairman of the El Valle de los Ranchos Water Sanitation District, Taos Municipal School Board Member, and Secretary of Acequia Los Cordovas #1. Most recently I serve as Taos County Commissioner for District 1. My focus has always been on service to my community. This has given me a wealth of experience in the development of local infrastructure initiatives, which helped drive the completion of several projects over the last few years including the paving of Blueberry Hill and Taos Veterans Cemetery.
(1) One of the biggest challenges in Taos County are new developments, and the need to develop land use regulations and a new development code.
(2) Building and maintaining needed infrastructure to serve the community.
(1) The current Commission, including myself, are currently in the process of reviewing and revising the land use regulations across the county to protect the community from unregulated growth.
(2) We are currently building workforce housing and securing funds for road improvements and other public works.
I think it is very important to have transparency and keep the community involved in the decision process for all pending projects. For the last four years I've found it effective to keep citizens informed via KCEI radio discussions, regularly scheduled public forums, and keeping the local Taos News apprised of all ongoing issues. This is the best way to keep a healthy democracy in place and make good local decisions.
For our future generations we must protect our environment and access to clean water resources. That is particularly true here in Taos where we are more vulnerable to climate changes due to our arid environment. To insure water availability and sustainability we need to steer local water entities such as mutual domestic water associations, and water and sanitation districts to collaborate, regionalize, and interconnect wherever feasible. In addition, water conservation programs need to be implemented to preserve continued availability even as the county grows.
