On election day 2026, I will be 57 years old. I grew up in Havre and went to college in Minnesota. I had many experiences as an athlete, a student, and as an outdoor educator. At some point, I realized that most of my work life had a component of teaching. So I became a teacher for 22 years. During that time, I realized that I was often in a position of leading colleagues, kids, athletes, parents, and even administrators. It seemed like a natural fit to move to working with and for all the K-12 students and families and the 16 school districts in Gallatin County. It has been worth it. The office has done good work in the last three plus years. We look forward to more time to continue what we have started.
My heart is invested in protecting access to quality education for all kids. We have a fairly healthy ecosystem of education in Gallatin County. But it can improve. To do that we need good private schools, homeschools, and public schools. This mix brings choice to families and the ability to serve the needs of all kids. We need great teachers. We need stability. All of these exist, but they are under threat due to the cost of living, the bill for a high quality education, and the pressures of a changing world not only on students, but also for families and staff.
My goal in my first term was to reconnect schools and their communities. That is ongoing. Educating kids is a necessity for the health of our communities. It benefits all of us.
