The primary responsibility of a county school board member is to govern the public school system and represent the community it serves. The board establishes policies that guide district operations, ensures responsible financial oversight by approving the annual budget and major expenditures, and addresses matters such as teacher tenure. One of the board’s most important responsibilities is hiring, supervising, and evaluating the Director of Schools, who is the board’s only direct employee. The board must ensure the director implements board policies and is held accountable for student outcomes. School board members serve as a bridge between the community and the school system, listening to parents, teachers, and stakeholders.
One of the biggest challenges facing our district is rapid growth. As our community expands, so does the strain on school infrastructure. When I first ran for office, overcrowding was a major concern and rezoning students every two years created instability for families, including my own neighborhood. Since being elected, we secured land and built two new schools to help address capacity. However, Rutherford County continues to add roughly 1,000 students each year. Rising construction costs and limited funding make this challenge more complex. Addressing growth will require long-term planning, collaboration among government partners, and exploring sustainable funding solutions to maintain strong schools and provide stability for families.
If elected, I will continue addressing growth through long-term planning and responsible policy. I helped create a policy that provides clear guidelines for new school construction and strengthens site-selection standards to protect taxpayer dollars. Managing growth requires thoughtful investment and collaboration. I will continue working with local and state partners while exploring opportunities to partner with other entities and educational institutions to identify additional funding sources for school construction. These efforts will help ensure we build schools responsibly, maintain strong educational opportunities, and provide stability for families as Rutherford County continues to grow.
