School board members determine how the district functions, including approving the budget, curriculum, and school zones. They hire and evaluate the Director of Schools. The school board is responsible for adopting the policies that are followed throughout the school system. The policies they approve follow federal and state laws.

I believe the main responsibility of a county school board member is to do what's right for children/students. Our current students are the future, and they depend on us to provide them with the best quality education.
I believe the biggest challenge facing schools at this time is maintaining the excellent programs/schools that we have while we continue to grow.
The first thing I would do to address this challenge is to support our Director of Schools Dr. Jimmy Sullivan. It is no accident that Rutherford County Schools has the ratings they have. Dr. Sullivan is an outstanding leader and should be supported as such.
