County commissioners are responsible for managing and approving countywide budgets, ensuring appropriate land use, granting exceptions when necessary, and maintaining transparency in county government operations.
They should also be willing to speak publicly on issues that affect the county—both in support of and in opposition to matters of public concern. It is important for commissioners to clearly explain issues to their constituents, communicate the reasoning behind their committee decisions and votes, and demonstrate authenticity and accountability in their leadership.
1. Ensure that property development does not outpace existing infrastructure, or that the necessary infrastructure is in place to properly support new growth.
2. Promote strategic, long-term capacity planning so the county can anticipate and prepare for future needs rather than reacting to problems after they arise.
Too often we put the “cart before the horse,” assuming development will eventually pay for the infrastructure it requires. Residents see the result when roads and other infrastructure never catch up. We should strengthen Plan Rutherford by aligning rezoning decisions with the plan and avoiding development in areas where infrastructure is not ready.
Jail, school, landfill, and road capacity are all tied to population growth. Our county has grown steadily for decades, in hindsight future needs have been predictable. I will push for planning based on projected growth so we address capacity needs strategically rather than reacting after these predictable problems emerge.
