Education Background BA - Smith College, JD - IU Mauer School of Law-Bloomington
Occupation Attorney, History Teacher, School Board Member, Mediator
I am a 4th-generation Hoosier, daughter of Stu and Jane Huffman, and native Brown Countian. My husband, Jim Oliver and I raised our 2 sons here, and serve our rural community volunteering with scouting, Nashville United Methodist Church, and Mother’s Cupboard. As a public service attorney and prosecutor with 25 years of experience, I’ve represented our most vulnerable neighbors—those facing domestic violence, and homelessness. With 5 years as a history teacher and 6 on the school board, I bring unique insight from both the classroom and the boardroom. As your state representative, I will draw on my experience as a neighbor, lawyer, and educator to prioritize the needs of real people over corporate interests at the Statehouse.
Statehouse leaders aren't listening. I will represent Hoosier over corporate interests. We must address these urgent challenges: Education: For 15 years, public schools have been starved while private charter and voucher schools receive tax dollars without accountability. I will fight for fair teacher wages and hold all taxpayer-funded schools to the same standards. Food Security: With 1M Hoosiers hungry, legislators rejected surplus funds for SNAP and SUN Bucks food assistance for children. I will prioritize every child receiving the nutrition they need. Housing: With rents near $2,000 and home prices soaring in Brown and Monroe Counties, housing is unaffordable. I will invest in affordable options for renters and homeowners.
Aging and failing water and sewer systems along with crumbling roads are some of our most urgent investment needs in rural areas. These pose direct health risks to residents and stymie economic growth and community vitality. I pledge to work with community leaders in each of District 62’s three counties to find and fund solutions that invest in our children’s future. I support state, federal and private funding for infrastructure upgrades that also protect and conserve our region’s vast natural resources like forests, wetlands, and wildlife.
All Hoosiers deserve affordable healthcare. Recent Medicaid cuts increase premiums for everyone and threaten the survival of rural hospitals. In parts of District 62, many live 45 minutes from a hospital and these closures are a matter of life and death. I support legislation to: 1)Stabilize Medicaid costs by developing a long-term state budget and pushing back on the insurance lobby; 2)Invest in public health to educate on disease prevention and manage chronic conditions before they become emergencies; 3) Increase incentives to attract healthcare professionals and community paramedicine programs to underserved rural areas. I will vote for affordable, accessible, quality health care that prioritizes people over profits.
As a U.S. government and history teacher, I taught my students the importance of civic engagement and political integrity. Now, I am putting those lessons into practice. As your legislator, my most important work is listening to your needs, not those of corporate lobbyists. I want to understand the impact a bill will have on Hoosiers before supporting it. I will stay connected to you - whether I’m at the Statehouse during the session or at home in District 62. You can count on my accessibility and regular participation at town halls, legislative updates, and local community events to ensure our government remains transparent and accountable to the people it serves.
