In the preamble to the constitution, the founding fathers listed what they considered to be the role of the government. We always hear about providing for the common defense and domestic tranquility, but it's far harder to get people to act when it's time to promote the general welfare. These past years the county board has struggled to balance the budget after removing the wheel tax, they decided that the necessary sacrifice was Pine Crest. They sold one of the highest-rated elderly care facilities to a private equity firm with a history of abuse and neglect at their locations. I was raised Christian, and to me the most meaningful commandment is the second most important: "Love thy neighbor as thyself." This is what I hope to model.
The county is dying. Our education system is the lowest ranked in the state. Employment options are few and many don't pay a living wage. Housing, food, gas, and energy costs are increasing with no signs of it slowing down. About fourth of our residence work and struggle to make ends meet. Many of the houses are aged and need work and there is a chronic lack of new housing at affordable prices. I don't have the answer to this. I'm not an expert but I know that we can't keep going as we have been. Other places have solved similar problems so I believe it is time for us to recognize there is a problem and commit to solving it.
I believe my biggest strength is my willingness to admit my own ignorance. I'm just one man and while I've done a fair amount of things there are many things I don't know and I am willing and eager to seek new information and learn about solutions to problems. I currently am an IT worker and that mind set will be a huge help as our primary purpose is a problem solver (though some would say we are problem makers.) I also come with a strong sense of justice. I have spent much of my adult life poor, I understand and sympathize with those who are on welfare and the stress and pain of poverty. I have a strong sense of empathy and hope that together we can find solutions of the problems we are all facing.
I am a strong believer in democracy. During the fight to keep Pine Crest owned by the county I pushed for the question to be put to a referendum so that we the people would have the chance to weigh in directly. I feel as though any time we have a large portion of the population willing to stand up and speak on an issue such as Pine Crest it should go to a public vote.
