I’m torn on data centers. For a new data center to have my support, it must generate its own power, create ample jobs, and the surrounding area must have the infrastructure to sustain it and any environmental impacts. These requirements could lead to Maryland losing these projects, their jobs, and tax revenue to other states though. Residents should always be part of the conversation when projects are being considered, especially of this scale, and I would ask my constituents before such a vote.
I attribute the rising costs to increasing demand from data centers, grid operator PJM’s backlog, and renewable energy production in Maryland not backfilling enough of the deficit left by closed coal-fired plants. I will address the rising costs by pushing for more energy production in Maryland, including new nuclear, renewable sources, and temporarily reopening coal-fired plants. I also support giving consumers more options by permitting the fairer retail energy suppliers to return to Maryland.
Yes, it should be improved because it would help to ease traffic congestion and connect more workers to jobs for whom the length of commute or cost of gas would otherwise be prohibitive. Maryland should continuing striving towards more transit-oriented development, focusing new housing construction near public transit hubs. Our county has a bus service, Harford Transit LINK, and I think its expansion could mitigate our crowded roadways, which are top-of-mind for voters in my community.
My foremost budget priority is long-term solutions to our structural deficit, addressing how spending is outpacing revenue growth before 2030's estimated $4 billion deficit. My second priority is more accountability for agencies who overspend their budgets and can’t account for certain expenses. My third priority is the solvency of the Transportation Trust Fund, which finances our roads. Programs I will fight for include education, disability services, and more capital funding for my district.
I will back measures to consider immigrants as we would our neighbors. I have connected with voters who feel apprehensive about our immigrant communities, and with voters who feel unwelcome due to that apprehension -- yet all expressed similar concerns about safety and affordability for their families. My campaign is about emphasizing what we have in common, and as delegate, I'll stress our similarities to strengthen trust in our immigrant communities and their relationship with law enforcement.
Like all development and land use issues, my primary concern is for community support and input. I have a record as Bel Air Town Commissioner for opposing unwieldy projects out of step with the character of the Town of Bel Air. We have passed major legislation to stop overdevelopment and I would not support any state mandates that override local control on data centers or any other major residential or commercial projects. Regardless of economic impact, this must be a local decision.
Utility costs are on the rise because Annapolis fails to understand the basic premise of supply and demand. Their policies have decreased supply by shuttering Maryland production of reliable energy while artificially inflating demand with green energy mandates that simply cannot be met by current renewable production. Maryland must repeal harmful mandates, invest in natural gas infrastructure, and begin the transition to reliable nuclear energy over the next decade. We deserve affordable power.
The State of Maryland is under no obligation to irresponsibly dump billions into an already bloated, inefficient transportation system that less than a tenth of residents use. Our focus should be on making it more affordable for motorists to continue to register their vehicles and pay for gas. While Annapolis has declared a war on Marylanders with cars, I will fight against the growing effort to make Maryland families dependent on the government for the ability to move around their communities.
The only priority that every legislator should have on their mind is slashing the out-of-control structural deficit that has already cost Marylanders billions in increased taxes and fees and is set to rapidly worsen in the next fiscal year. We must cut spending, repeal the Moore tax and fee increases, and stop the irresponsible growth of rapidly expanding programs like Kirwan. If we don't, the state of Maryland will go bankrupt within the decade and our children will be left to pick up the tab.
The General Assembly has erred greatly in halting the critical 287(g) program, which permitted cooperation between local corrections and federal law enforcement, removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens from our communities. I will fight to restore this critical program to keep all Marylanders safe. Marylanders of all backgrounds deserve to feel secure in their own communities, and I will fight for policies to hold criminals accountable and keep our families safe.
