To protect ratepayers, large energy users like data centers should pay their fair share of the costs they impose on our power grid. If they do, they should not be blocked from locating in Maryland.
Utility costs have risen due to inflation in fuel, labor, and equipment costs. But they're also higher because we haven't invested enough over the years to keep our energy infrastructure modern. Finally, big energy users impose large loads which have stressed the power grid's ability to serve all consumers. Those users need to pay their fair share of the costs to upgrade the grid to ensure that our power supplies are adequate for reliable service.
Public transportation is important and should be improved. It is essential for many in our community to get to work, school, and elsewhere. It helps us to grow without increasing congestion - a benefit for those with and without private automobiles. I am happy to see that construction of Maryland's Purple Line continues to progress and that it is projected to be finished in 2027.
My priority is to protect essential government services without raising taxes. This is important especially at a time when family budgets are stressed with higher prices for food, utilities, housing and other essentials. We must continue to support education in our state because that is the path to opportunity and growth. And we need to support public safety, environmental protection, and infrastructure improvements because these contribute to a good quality of life in our state.
Immigrant families are families like yours and mine. They want what all families want. A secure, safe place to live and work, and a chance to contribute and see their children thrive. We shouldn't tolerate hate and the destruction of our immigrant communities. The destruction of immigrant families - when parents are separated from their children - will hurt us all in the long run. We need to do everything possible at the state level to defend against the abuses committed by federal authorities.
