Data centers are necessary, but the rapid expansion is straining our power grid, consuming large amounts of water, and creating noise that harms nearby communities. I supported legislation to study their impacts and establish guardrails. I also backed requirements that data centers benefit local economies, limit grid impacts through storage or local power, and engage communities with transparent plans. Technology will continue evolving, and today’s data center model will likely change over time.
Energy bills are increasing because BGE charges to deliver gas and electricity to our homes have been rising significantly. I supported legislation to help lower energy costs. This legislation requires only necessary safety upgrades to BGE infrastructure, capped the use of ratepayer funds for executive pay, reduced Empower Maryland goals and costs, and provided direct rate relief for ratepayers in 2025-2027. We also are investing in mid- and long-term solutions to our energy supply needs.
Public transportation should be improved statewide. It’s an equity issue—people need reliable ways to get to jobs and shopping whether they own a car or not. While areas near DC have strong systems, the Baltimore region and parts of the state lack access. Better transit improves air quality, reduces congestion, and supports workers and employers. I have supported legislation investing in transportation infrastructure including roads, rails, buses, trails, pedestrian walkways and bikeways.
I have served on the Appropriations Committee throughout my legislative career. Each year we produce a balanced budget that funds the services Marylanders rely on. My priorities are affordable healthcare; education equity from early childhood through higher education, including libraries and senior resources; and energy affordability, including investments in renewables. I will fight for the Blueprint, ACA premium subsidies, and programs supporting working families and people with disabilities.
Immigration has always been central to the American story, and immigrants’ contributions to our country are immense. Today our federal immigration system is broken, with severe backlogs and outdated quotas. I support due process under the Constitution, ensuring notice and fair hearings before deportation. I backed legislation banning 287(g) agreements so local police are not used as federal immigration agents, protecting limited resources and preventing civil rights abuses and racial profiling.
