Communities are now realizing the costs associated with data centers. Higher utility bills for residents result when contracts do not require these centers to pay for all of the resources they utilize. I support additional data centers in Maryland only if they generate or directly fund their own power and make meaningful investments in the communities where they locate. Any project should ensure it does not burden utilities or residents and that the host community sees clear, lasting benefits.
A myriad of factors contribute, including insufficient generation in the state, unaccountable utility companies, and duplicative or inefficient energy programs. Some strategies I'm advocating to address: blocking utility cost overruns, holding utilities accountable, requiring refunds for over-collection, eliminating inefficient energy programs, increasing competition and supply in energy markets, capping nuclear project costs, and reducing administrative overhead in energy efficiency programs.
In Western Maryland, we rely heavily on roads, bridges, and local bus services. While we must honor collaborative commitments to systems like Metro, rural regions have different needs. Investment must be distributed fairly across the entire state, and different modalities (air, road, rail) should be considered individually. Public transportation should be improved across Maryland, and I would especially welcome expanded options in Western Maryland.
My budget priorities will always be funding local projects and Western Maryland programs. Funding the George Edwards Fund, Program Open Space, and I-81 Expansion for example. I will also fight that when tough budget decisions are made, they aren't made at the expense of our most vulnerable populations, like our Developmentally Disabled community, seniors, or children. I will also fight for any programs that support veterans and first responders. Last year I secured over 70 Million in new local $
I support creating a Temporary Worker Oversight Unit in the MD Dept of Labor to oversee the employment of H-2A and H-2B visa holders in the State. This would include inspections of worksites and housing and inspect payroll records, housing conditions, transportation arrangements, and safety compliance. I also support policies that protect or shield constitutionally protected status holders like asylum seekers and visa holders and ensure the safety and dignity of all of our residents.
