Maryland families and businesses are facing rapidly rising utility bills. Recent data has shown that states that have accelerated data center development have seen astronomical electricity cost increases. Without additional generation commitments from industry, I believe data centers place an unfair burden on Maryland. However, I am open to finding solutions that sustainably generate power and still allow local governments in our State to benefit.
Maryland Families should not have to choose between heating their home and paying their rent. Major infrastructure installments, implemented by BGE and financed by rate payers, are a contributing factor to rising energy costs. Data Centers also place a significant strain on the electrical grid and cause additional costs for ratepayers. I am supportive of legislation that will address this situation and actions by the Governor to secure a rate cap.
Public transportation boosts local economies, improves quality of life, and levels the socioeconomic playing field. Through my service on the House Appropriations Committee, I have been a leading champion for sustainable funding for public transit. This includes passing policies that maintain investments in our locally operated transit systems across Maryland and that ensure MTA fares are affordable for residents that lack other transportation alternatives.
I support accessible and sustainable transportation options for all and introduced the Transportation and Climate Alignment Act to ensure that State transportation spending benefits communities and the environment. I support small businesses and have sponsored legislation that will enable small businesses to afford start-up leases. Ensuring our first responders and frontline personnel are supported, I introduced HB1245 to establish a program to provide childcare support to first responders.
As an immigrant, I innately understand the values immigrants bring to our communities across the State, but also the hardships that they face. I was proud to vote to end 287g agreements in Maryland and to cosponsor the ICE Breakers Act, which would prevent ICE agents from being hired as police officers in the future. These two bills, among others that I support, are vital to protecting our immigrant community from the tyranny of the federal government.
