The key is balancing positives:
-economic gains and benefits of cloud computing- including AI, finance, health care, and government services
against negatives:
-grid reliability challenges, energy price increases, and environmental impacts.
The latter three are most significant to me. The benefits of the postives can be achieved remotely without placing data centers in neighborhoods or environmentally sensitive areas. We must prioritize protecting our communities and consumers.
Utilities like BGE and Delmarva Power have significantly increased delivery rates to fund infrastructure upgrades, and those costs are passed on to customers. Given the profits they report, I believe the PSC should more strictly regulate how these costs are passed on. They should also be granted stronger authority, including oversight of wholesale electricity prices set by PJM Interconnection and capacity auction outcomes. The impact of data centers was discussed in Question #1 above.
Absolutely. We must seriously invest in public transportation across our state—not only to reduce environmental impact of transportation, but to expand access and equity for living and working in Maryland. In the greater Baltimore region, transit is disjointed and insufficient. We need a comprehensive, interconnected system that serves our communities today which will also prepare us for the future.
As a career public school teacher, my budget focus is strong support for public education and the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future. This landmark legislation is already improving outcomes for our children, and we must continue that progress.
We should also invest in clean energy incentives to address climate change and affordability.
Finally, the budget must provide to strengthen mental health supports across Maryland.
I have already begun this work. This session, I introduced HB1341 to prevent school employees—who have unique access to students and their families—from cooperating with ICE investigations involving students, families, or acquaintances unless a warrant is issued. The bill also expands “sensitive locations” to include bus stops and school vehicles and requires staff to notify the superintendent of any investigation. This is just the beginning for me!
