No. The economic benefit of data centers does not outway the immense cost to electricity bills, resource drain, and damage to nearby residents health. There are far better industries to promote that do not come with these affects. We have not done enough to understand the full costs of these centers or justify the massive tax breaks they're given. I've spoken out against them in Frederick County and I will continue to do so in my home district.
Energy costs are a nation wide issue, with factors within and without state control. That said, rapid expansion of data centers and delayed deployment of energy generation sources are major factors. I plan to push for local-government-owned solar to lower electricity bills and generate revenue for local investment. I'm opposed to spending more money on out-of-state fuels. I support expanding nuclear, so long as protections are robust and local benefit is ensured.
We've tried adding lanes for 30 years, and it just doesn't work. Traffic continues to waste time and money while adding more risk for accidents. Transportation between key areas that is reliable and open to the public lowers congestion, saves the state and the people money, and makes driving safer. Western Maryland used to have robust rail connections and there is money for that to be the case once again.
Budget priorities will be protecting services that help working families and farmers, eliminating wasteful contracts and corruption, and closing loopholes and tax breaks for data centers and corporations. I'll fight for programs for new energy generation and energy efficiency, education and medical access for rural areas, and bringing quality personnel for Western Maryland's schools and hospitals to fight shortages.
The ICE detention center in Williamsport destroys community, costs the taxpayers millions with no benefit, and will forever stain our area. I'm not interested in building anything based off fear and violence. We've been told for years that our problems are because of immigrants while corporations robbed us blind and destroyed our landscape. I'll fight to protect anyone who embraces our community and commits to helping our people, regardless of immigration status.
