I support special elections to fill General Assembly vacancies. While the current appointment process is efficient, it bypasses the direct input of the community. Democracy is strongest when the foundation of representation is the people's vote. Replacing an appointment system with special elections ensures that every legislator earns their mandate directly from the voters they serve, maintaining true accountability and upholding the fundamental principles of our elective process.
In filling a Maryland General Assembly vacancy, I prioritize leaders with uncompromising integrity and a proven commitment to democratic resilience. Key criteria include moral courage, shown through ethical decision making under political pressure, and active anti-fascist advocacy to protect civil liberties. Candidates must demonstrate tangible community impact in Hagerstown or statewide, coupled with a fierce dedication to defending the democratic process against any form of subversion.
I want to serve on the Central Committee to ensure our party remains a bulwark against fascism and a champion for democratic integrity. The descent into open authoritarianism has pushed me to take action, and the Democratic Central Committee is where I can make the most significant impact. I am committed to vetting leaders with uncompromising morals, defending our civil liberties, and strengthening the party infrastructure to protect the democratic process at every level.
I will ensure appointment decisions serve the community through radical transparency and public accountability. I advocate for open forums and published criteria to eliminate backroom deals. My process includes soliciting input from local civic groups and implementing formal comment periods for residents. Most importantly, I will mandate rigorous vetting of a candidate’s moral courage and record to ensure they possess the integrity needed to defend our democracy and resist subversion.

I support the use of a special election when a seat in the General Assembly is vacated. Our system of government is rooted in the principle that authority ultimately rests with the people. While the Democratic Central Committee may make an interim appointment to ensure continuity of representation, that appointment should serve only until the voters have the opportunity to select their representative through a special election.
Appointments to the General Assembly carry significant responsibility. I would ensure that all applicable laws are followed and that any candidate meets the required qualifications, including residency, age, and party affiliation. I would also conduct a thorough interview and background review to better understand the candidate’s character, values, and integrity. My goal would be to ensure that the individual selected demonstrates a genuine commitment to faithfully representing the community.
Being elected to the Democratic Central Committee would be a great honor. I am running because I believe strongly in strengthening Democratic values here in Washington County. At a time when Democratic voter registration has declined locally, it is important that we reaffirm our commitment to diversity, transparency, and inclusive leadership. The Central Committee has an important role in engaging our communities, strengthening our party, and ensuring the principles Democrats hold dear prevail.
Selections to appoint representatives who will govern our communities must never be taken lightly. In addition to ensuring that candidates meet all basic legal requirements, I would advocate for a thorough vetting process to confirm that each individual genuinely reflects the values, character, and priorities of the citizens they would represent. A thoughtful interview process guided by questions designed to elicit substantive responses would help ensure that these qualities are clear.
Although this is ceding one of the roles of the central committee to put forward candidates for office, I am in favor of the special elections, especially if they are done in tandem with other elections to keep costs down and voter participation higher.
Someone who respects the views of their constituents, and votes accordingly.
Ability to engage in discourse with opposing parties...a bridge builder
One educated on the issues
A person with integrity, fair-mindedness
Proven community organization involvement
I stand with my team in seeing strong, qualified Democrats in Washington County succeed in their aspirations to hold elected office, broadening the electorate by expanding the number of registered voters in the county, and growing the network of grassroots supporters and activists.
Conducting thorough background checks of individuals running for office and discerning their suitability will insure the community's best interests are served.
I support the bills currently in the state legislature that propose a constitutional amendment requiring special elections for General Assembly vacancies. The bills call for special elections to be held at the same time as the regular primaries and general elections, thus adding no additional costs to taxpayers while providing the voters the opportunity to choose their representatives. If the bills pass and the amendment goes to referendum, voters can choose whether to support this plan or not.
I would look for a person who is deeply embedded in the community she or he would represent, who has strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, who has demonstrated the ability to work collaboratively, who is able to learn and adapt at a fast pace, and, most importantly, someone who is a person of integrity.
I am concerned about the lack of diverse voices in our elected offices. Washington County has become a one-party government, resulting in a lack of accountability and transparency as well as limits to public debate. I want to build more grassroots involvement in party activities, increase the number of registered Democrats, and improve voter turnout with the ultimate goal of electing more Democrats on a local level, thus ensuring a better balance in the representation of county citizens.
I would announce the vacancy and call for interested persons to submit an application letter or resume with references. The applicants would go through a vetting process that includes verification of information provided as well as a screening of the person's social media accounts. Candidates would be interviewed at a public meeting. The timeframe would allow the candidate's supporters to contact the committee with letters of recommendation. Central Committee members would vote in open session.
I support the central committee appointing someone to complete the rest of the term. I do not support a special election as I worry how voter turnout may be.
I will research and educate myself on the potential person. I will talk with other committee members as well as people in the community to get a better understanding of the potential person.
I would like to help strengthen the Democratic Party in Washington County. I want to be a part of change in our community. Sitting on the sidelines no longer seems like a viable option for me.
I will make appointment decisions by not only doing my own research, but also by getting community input. It is important to hear from a variety of people so there is balance for the greater good.
Yes. I support special elections whenever possible so voters have a direct voice in choosing their representatives. Democratic principles emphasize participation and transparency. Allowing the public to help determine their leadership strengthens trust in government and ensures the community is fairly represented.
The Central Committee has an important responsibility to recommend qualified Democratic candidates when a vacancy occurs. I would look for individuals with integrity, strong ties to the community, and a demonstrated commitment to Democratic values and public service who can effectively represent Washington County.
As a former member of the Democratic Central Committee, I took the responsibility of identifying and supporting strong Democratic candidates seriously. I want to bring that experience back to help strengthen our party locally, expand civic engagement, and ensure Democratic voices continue to be represented in our community.
Drawing on my prior service, I would prioritize candidates who demonstrate integrity, a record of public service, and strong community ties. Equally important is a commitment to cultural inclusivity and ensuring diverse voices are represented. Appointments should reflect the full community and uphold Democratic values of equity, transparency, and accountability.
Yes. I support special elections to fill General Assembly vacancies, with an interim appointment only to prevent gaps in representation. When people can choose, legitimacy and accountability rise. If appointments remain, the process should be public: clear timelines, open interviews, and plenty of time for community input.
I will choose someone who is:
Values-aligned on human rights, democracy, and justice
Ready to collaborate effectively
Ethical and transparent
Strengthening representation and building a broad coalition to hold the seat
Democracy is not a spectator sport. It is something we make together, day after day, in public and in common.
I’m running because I want a government that is transparent, that invites public comment and takes it seriously, that is rooted in human rights, and that treats participation not as a nuisance but as its source of legitimacy.
I will treat every appointment as a public trust, ensuring the process serves the community, not insiders.
Before considering any candidates, I will set clear criteria: what the role must deliver, which qualifications matter, and what ethics and conflict of interest rules apply.
I will seek input from those most affected, especially voices often left out, and make that feedback part of the decision. Diverse panels, structured interviews, and documented scoring to ensure transparency.

To fill vacancies, I support a temporary appointment with that status expiring at the next regularly scheduled election. At this time, a special election should occur to encourage the participation of the most people in our community.
For those seeking to fill vacancies in the General Assembly, I would look for two prime characteristics: Past leadership and community-centered vision. These two characteristics show the true intent and ability for any potential appointment.
Having worked in Democratic Party politics since 2018, I felt that the voice of a young person should be present on a committee that seeks to represent the entire population of our community. My experience in field organizing, fundraising, and internal logistics also gives me a unique perspective on building our party locally.
The community should always have input on who is being appointed to positions. For the Central Committee, this should include having transparent interview processes, as well as time for feedback on the candidate the Central Committee puts forward before making the appointment official.

Candidates must show a proven ability to understand and represent the district’s diverse constituents through meaningful engagement. Broad electability is critical, including strong support within the local Democratic Party, community stakeholders, and the broader electorate. Finally, unquestioned personal integrity, full availability, and a genuine commitment to serve effectively in the role are non-negotiable.
The downward trend in Democratic registration and voting rates and the decline in the number of Democrats willing to run for office have led to one-party rule in Washington County. I hope stepping forward will encourage other like-minded Democrats to do the same.
As a lifelong Washington County resident, husband, father, business owner, farmer, and Scout leader, I will draw on these experiences to thoughtfully evaluate and recommend candidates best suited to fill any vacancy.
