: In my opinion, this would be a question of the time remaining in that position. For a 2 -year or a 4-year position, if the vacancy occurs in the first 6- 8 months of the term, then I think a special election should be held for the voters of that district to elect a new representative to fill the balance of the term. If the vacancy occurs in the last 6 months of the term, then I think the Central Committee can recruit / appoint a replacement to complete that term.
I would include:
• Residency in that District of at least 18 months.
• Expressed knowledge of the issues pertinent to that District, including current and historical issues. The Central Committee can evaluate that knowledge by a first round of written responses and then followed by an in-person interview.
• Proof of the candidate’s history of community involvement in local politics and in local service groups.
• Three references to show the candidate’s ability to listen well, and serve others.
I served this Calvert community for 43 years as a teacher and as an elementary administrator. Also, I served as a Youth coach in Parks & Rec. I continue to serve this community as a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, the Lusby food drop at Middleham parish, on the Big Conversation steering committee, as member for the NAACP-Calvert branch, and as a chess coach at 3 elementary schools. If I am elected to the Democratic Central Committee, then I will continue to serve through that committee.
My decisions will be based on what I hear and understand from the folks in the 1st district. I will vote for candidates who listen, know and understand the needs and issues of the 1st district citizens. I expect candidates to work and fight that all citizens receive quality health care, equal access to local and state resources, equitable education and opportunities, and equitable law protection.
